OMAHA, Neb. - Michelle Kaus tied a career-high by draining six three-point field goals, as she led the Creighton women's basketball team past preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorite Drake, 67-57, at the Civic Auditorium on a snowy Sunday afternoon. Kaus finished with a team-high 18 points as the Bluejays captured their second straight MVC win to move to 2-3 in conference play, 5-11 overall. The loss for Drake was its sixth straight, dropping the Bulldogs to 0-5 in Valley action, 5-10 overall.
It was behind Kaus' hot first-half shooting that the Bluejays took control of the game. After Drake scored the first basket of the game, Kaus scored CU's first nine points on her first three three-point attempts of the game to put the Jays up 9-4. A 10-0 run by the Jays pushed their lead to 13-4 before the first four minutes had passed.
The Bulldogs would respond however, cutting a 15-6 CU lead down to a 17-15 Bluejay advantage. Up 19-17, the Jays used three-pointers from Kaus and Ally Thrall, along with a lay-up from Kristina Voss to go back up by 10 with seven to play in the first half. From there, the Bluejays coasted into a 32-24 haftime advantage, where the Jays are now 5-0 on the season when leading at the break. Kaus made 5-of-6 three-point attempts in the opening frame and CU, statistically the poorest three-point shooting team in the MVC, went 6-for-10 from three-point range in the first half. The Bulldogs made only 11-of-40 shots from the field (27.5 percent).
Creighton burst out of halftime with a 12-2 run to go up 44-26 at the first media timeout of the second half. Drake would get no closer than 14 points over the next 12 minutes, as CU pushed to its largest lead of the game, up 62-41 with just under six minutes to go. The Bulldogs would trim the CU lead to single digits, 62-53 after a Moniqu?? Jones free-throw with less than 90 seconds to go, but the Bluejays would hold onto their lead and top the Bulldogs for the first time in five meetings.
The Bluejays shot a season-high 57.1 percent from three point land, making 8-of-14 long range shots. Kaus paced the Jays with 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range, to tie her career numbers in those catergories. She led the team with 18 points, and has now made 10-of-18 three-pointers in CU's last two games.
Junior Sara Cain came off the bench to score 16 points, making 7-of-13 shots in just 17 minutes. Rookie Sam Schuett was the only other CU player in double figures, finishing 5-for-5 from the floor for 11 points to go along with a career-best five assists. Thrall topped the team with six helpers, while Voss tied a career-high with a team-best nine rebounds and logged a career-best four steals.
Drake's Brandy Dahir led all players with 20 points, while Jones finished with 12 points and Lindsay Whorton chipped in 11 for the Bulldogs. Kaniesha Agee led DU with six assists and had eight rebounds, but was scoreless on 0-of-8 shooting from the field.
Creighton returns to action on the road at Southern Illinois Thursday. CU and the Salukis (9-8, 5-1 MVC) will tipoff at SIU Arena at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
