OMAHA, Neb. ? Junior Andrei Gotsmanov scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the second half and the Creighton men's soccer team out-shot Western Illinois 22-10, but the Bluejays and Leathernecks played to a 1-1 draw Friday night in front of 3,236 fans at Morrison Stadium. The overtime match was Creighton's fifth in eight matches this season, moving its record to 4-1-3 overall and 2-0-3 in overtime contests this fall.
For the first time this season the Bluejays trailed at halftime, as Kevin Hinds found the back of the net on a header in the 16th minute to put Western Illinois (4-5-2) up 1-0.
CU trailed at halftime despite putting five shots on goal in the first half and owning an 11-6 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Bluejays dominated the second half as they switched from a 3-5-2 into a 3-4-3 and controlled the pace of play. Creighton unloaded 10 second-half shots, while not allowing a second-half Leatherneck shot until 3:26 left in regulation.
After Mo Travis was taken down inside the box in the 68th minute, Gotsmanov attempted and converted Creighton's first penalty kick of the season to notch his team-leading third goal of the year. Gotsmanov later had a chance to win the match in regulation, when he slid a shot across an open goal mouth just beyond the far post with 11:54 to play.
The Jays had another golden opportunity to win the match in the 105th minute, when Tony Schmitz also pushed a shot just wide of the post.
“It was just one of those nights,” said head coach Bob Warming after the match. “We created plenty of chances, certainly enough to win the game. Our players are disappointed and our coaches are disappointed, but we know this is a good team.”
For the second time this season, the Bluejays tied the Morrison Stadium record with 13 corner kicks in the match (also done against San Diego State). Creighton now has an incredible 71-27 edge in corner kicks this season.
The Bluejays have little time to dwell on the draw, as they are back in action against Midwestern rival Memphis on Sunday. The Tigers (5-1-3) also played to a double-overtime draw on Friday night, battling Tulsa to a 3-3 tie. Kickoff in Memphis for Creighton's first true road match of the season is set for 1 p.m.
