OMAHA, Neb. - Sara Cain led all players with 14 points and nine rebounds as the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Evansville 77-65 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Thursday night. The Bluejays won their fifth straight home game to improve to 5-1 at home in Missouri Valley Conference play, while moving to 10-14 on the season and 7-6 in MVC action.
Creighton was slow out of the gate, making just three of its first 11 shots while falling behind 10-6. The Jays then drained their next five field goal attempts to take an 18-11 lead 7:30 into the contest. CU would never again trail in the game, moving ahead by as many as nine in the first half before taking a 37-30 lead into the break.
Evansville (15-10, 8-6 MVC) would get within four when a Rebekah Parker free-throw made the score 43-39 in favor of the Bluejays with 4:39 gone by in the second half. That was as close as the Aces would get in the second half, as three-pointers from Michelle Kaus and Chevelle Herring pushed the Jays back ahead by 10. Creighton's largest lead of the game came with 4:26 to play, as the Jays were up 67-49.
Cain finished 7-for-14 from the field for 14 points in just 22 minutes, while she tied her career-high with nine rebounds. Kaus and Ally Thrall finished with 13 points each, as both were perfect from the line - Kaus 3-for-3 and Thrall 6-for-6. Sam Schuett added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Redshirt freshman Megan Neuvirth continued her push for MVC Newcomer of the Year, with a near triple double. She finished with nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists in only 24 minutes before fouling out with 4:01 to play. Herring also finished with nine points, including 6-for-6 at the free-throw line as the Bluejays completed the season sweep of UE.
The Purple Aces were led by Robyn Jennings' 10 points. Parker went just 1-for-8 from the field, but finished with seven points, six boards, six assists and three steals for UE.
UE, the fourth-best shooting free-throw team in the NCAA, made 20-of-24 shots (.833) from the stripe. But the Jays hung with the Aces, making 21-of-26 (.808), well above their MVC-worst 64.8 percent at the line in MVC play. The Jays also out-worked UE on the glass, 41-31, including a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass.
The Bluejays will look for their sixth straight home win when they play host to Southern Illinois on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
