OMAHA, Neb. ? Senior Sam Eid and redshirt freshman Jeremy Wittig both scored fantastic goals as the Creighton men's soccer team tied Ohio State 2-2 Saturday night in exhibition play at Morrison Stadium. The only exhibition for the Bluejays this season netted an impressive 2,012 fans at CU's home pitch.
“I think the fans tonight got to see three of the best goals they'll ever see in an exhibition match, or any match for that matter,” said Bluejay head coach Bob Warming after the match, speaking of the two CU tallies and OSU's final score. “There were two incredible bombs and a diving header by Eid, which was very encouraging to see from Sam.”
The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Andrew Magill pounced on a rebounded save and found the back of the net from close range. Xavier Balc, who's initial shot attempt was stopped by Bluejay keeper Matt Allen, was credited with an assist.
Creighton promptly answered with its first score of the night in the 26th minute. Eid's diving header was set up from a beautiful cross from freshman Tucker Sindlinger. Sindlinger crossed the ball from the far right side after taking a nice feed from Danny Minutillo and raced down the sideline.
The match was even until OSU's Geoff Marsh sent a bomb from about 25 yards out, past a diving Allen into the lower left corner to put the Buckeyes up 2-1 in the 82nd minute.
Wittig scored the equalizer in the 88th minute when he took a misplayed ball from an Ohio State defender and unleashed a blast from just outside the top of the 18-yard box. His shot hit the cross bar and fell into the goal with just 2:58 to play in the match. Chris Schuler earned an assist on the score.
“I was really pleased with how many people showed up tonight, without the full student body even on campus yet,” said Warming. “I think that is just a testament to the wonderful fan base we've been able to build in Omaha.”
No overtime was played in the exhibition match. Allen, the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, played all 90 minutes in net for the Jays and stopped five OSU shots.
“The biggest thing I take from this game is the character this team showed,” said Warming. “Down a goal with under five to play and to have the courage to take that shot (Wittig), says a lot about our team, to battle back and not give up.”
