ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? The 16th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team remained undefeated and handed No. 2 Indiana its first loss of the season in a 2-1 decision for the Bluejays Thursday evening at the Saint Louis Nike Classic. Tim Walters scored the game-winning goal while playing in his home town, as the Bluejays dominated the match at Hermann Stadium.
“I'm really, really proud of how this team has continued to come together,” said head coach Bob Warming after his 350th career win. “We are such a young team and for us to continue to get better and play this well without Byron Dacy (out with an injured knee) and losing as many guys to the pros as we did from last year, is just a great sign for this team.”
After an evenly played first half, which saw the Bluejays (2-0-2) put the only two shots on goal and claim a slim 6-4 shots advantage, Creighton turned up the attack in the second half, unloading 11 shots to Indiana's three.
“At halftime I challenged our wide players to be more involved with the attack,” said Warming. “I thought those guys were spending too much time defending in the first half, and to his credit, Tim Bohnenkamp accepted that challenge and scored a beautiful goal to get us started.”
The attack logged its first tally in the 59th minute when Bohnenkamp scored for the Bluejays. The speedy Omaha native found the ball on his foot and for the first time in his career, netted a goal not at Morrison Stadium. His previous six career scores had all come in Omaha, but the senior's his first goal of the season gave the Jays the lead at 58:41.
Less than four minutes later, the Bluejays owned a two-goal lead when Walters found the back of the net. The junior forward, who attended nearby Lafayette High School in west St. Louis County, scored his second goal of the year at the 63:30 mark. Walters father - also named Tim - played soccer at Indiana from 1976-79. Tony Schmitz was credited with the assist after his serve glanced off the cross bar and Walters finished.
“What a nice homecoming for Tim Walters,” said Warming. “It's really special for Tim to be able to return here and play so well and score the game-winner.”
Indiana's (3-1-1) lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
Creighton's defense, which had posted two straight shutouts prior to Thursday, continued its hot play as the Hoosiers managed just one shot on goal in play. CU out-shot IU 17-7 in the game, led by Andrei Gotsmanov's five shots. Walters unloaded four shots off the bench, while Seth Sinovic and Tony Schmitz put two shots on goal each.
The Bluejays return to action at the Saint Louis Nike Classic on Saturday at noon when they play Loyola Marymount.
