OMAHA, Neb. ? Junior Andrei Gotsmanov scored twice and the Bluejay defense was stellar in a 3-0 blanking of Green Bay in men's soccer action at Morrison Stadium Sunday night. The win keeps the Bluejays undefeated all-time in the Diadora Challenge, CU is now 16-0-5 in the 11th annual event.
Gotsmanov, a transfer from St. John's, found the back of the net with a blast from 25 yards out at the 6:04 mark. He found himself wide open after a nice touch pass from freshman Tucker Sindlinger set up the score. Defender Chris Schuler was also credited with an assist after his long pass connected with Sindlinger in the seventh minute.
The score remained 1-0 for nearly the next 60 minutes until another Bluejay transfer scored his first Creighton goal in the 66th minute. Junior Tim Walters, playing in his second season at CU after spending his rookie year at Kentucky, knocked in a header off a set play. Tim Bohnenkamp sent a free kick into the box where Tony Schmitz put his head on the ball to direct it to Walters.
Gotsmanov scored his second goal of the match in the 89th minute after Sindlinger and Rodrigo Faria played give and go deep into the six-yard box until Sindlinger gave the ball up to Gotsmanov for an easy touch tally. The goal gave Gotsmanov his fourth collegiate multiple-goal match, as he tallied two hat tricks and a two-goal match as a rookie at St. John's in 2004.
The Bluejay defense was anchored by Schuler - also a transfer. The sophomore was a game-time decision to be in the starting lineup after missing the final 65 minutes of Friday night's match due to injury. The back played all 90 minutes and helped shut down an explosive Green Bay offense which scored three goals in a win over Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake on Friday night. His outstanding marking of Canadian U-20 National Team member Tosaint Ricketts keyed the victory.
The Bluejays out-shot the Phoenix 22-12 and out-cornered Green Bay 8-3 in the victory. Gotsmanov topped the team with six shots, while six other Bluejays attempted at least two shots.
Creighton returns to action when it hosts preseason No. 1 UCLA next Saturday at Morrison Stadium. It will mark the first ever visit by the Bruins to Omaha. UCLA returns nine starters from a team which advanced to the NCAA title match last season. Tickets are still available for the showdown with the Pac-10 and national power.
