OMAHA, Neb. ? Chris Schuler's shot on goal in the 110th minute of play brought the Morrison Stadium record crowd of 5,812 to its feet, but it proved to be the last chance on the night for the 25th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team in a well played 0-0 tie with 11th-ranked UCLA. While the Bruins (0-2-1) out-shot the Bluejays (1-0-2) on the night, the Creighton attack out-worked UCLA on corner kicks in the evenly played match.
As expected in a scoreless draw, it was close throughout, including a first-half which saw the Bluejays with the first scoring chance of the match. In the seventh minute sophomore Mo Travis made a run on the right side and rifled a close range shot, which was turned away by Bruin keeper Brian Perk. After the Bruins registered the next three shots in the opening half, junior Andrei Gotsmanov had two outstanding chances to score, one being snuffed out by Perk, with the other just going wide of the UCLA goal. Senior Tony Schmitz also had a great scoring chance in the closing minutes of the opening half, but sent a feed from Travis over the net.
UCLA was held without a shot on goal in the first half, despite out-shooting the Jays 6-5 in that span. The Jays had three corners to UCLA's zero in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Bluejays opened on the attack, earning a pair of corner kicks in the opening five minutes. A header by Andrew Duran went just left of the Bruin goal in the 49th minute. And while the Bruins out-shot CU 8-5 in the second half, continuous runs by Travis and Tim Bohnenkamp kept UCLA on its heels. CU owned an impressive 6-0 edge on corner kicks in the second half, including two in the closing three minutes of regulation.
UCLA's best chances to win came in the form of three consecutive shots in the 105th minute. Two straight headers by Jason Leopoldo hit the cross bar, while a third header by Kyle Nakazawa glanced off to post, all in the span of 15 seconds. That flurry of activity helped UCLA own a 6-1 edge in shots in the second overtime.
Both keepers made one save in overtime and finished with three in the match, as Bluejay senior Matt Allen and the CU defense notched their second straight shutout.
“I thought that Chris Schuler and Seth Sinovic were outstanding on defense tonight,” said head coach Bob Warming. “Those two were difference makers.”
Creighton's 5,812 fans topped the previous stadium and school record of 5,743 set against Stanford on Aug. 26, 2005 in an exhibition match.
The Bluejays return to action on Thursday when they face fourth-ranked Indiana at the Saint Louis Nike Classic.
