OMAHA, Neb. ? Three second half goals by Tulsa completed a come-from-behind 3-1 victory for the Golden Hurricane over the seventh-ranked Creighton men's soccer team at Morrison Stadium Saturday night. The loss ends the Bluejays' five-match unbeaten streak to start the season and drops them to 3-1-2, while Tulsa moved to 5-2-0 on the year.
Creighton was dominating in the first 60 minutes of the match, before the Tulsa offense found holes in the Bluejay defense. The Jays took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when after having a pair of shots turned away, junior Tim Walters followed his attempts with a pass to a wide-open Mo Travis, who tucked the ball away from inside six yards. The tally was Travis' first of the season and the helper was Walters' fourth point in the last three games.
At the end of the first half the Jays had out-shot the Hurricane 11-3, including four shots on goal by the Jays to none by TU. The Jays maintained control of the soccer portion of the match when Tulsa was not fouling, as the Hurricane racked up five yellow cards and an astounding 29 fouls.
“I was really unhappy with our performance in the back tonight,” said head coach Bob Warming. “That's really been a strength of ours up until tonight. But at the same time, fouling 29 times is no longer about playing soccer at that point and it's a tactical decision to take away from the game and it has absolutely no place in college soccer.”
Todd Goddard tied the match in the 67th minute when he received a long lead pass from Eric Burkholder. Goddard settled the ball past the CU defense and had just Matt Allen to beat for his fifth goal of the year. Burkholder then scored what proved to be the game-winner as a careless play by the Bluejay defense allowed the ball to end up on his foot just outside the 18-yard box. His unassisted blast from 20 yards gave TU a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute. Goddard added a late goal to cap the TU scoring in the 87th minute.
The Bluejays out-shot Tulsa 22-12 in the match as they were the aggressors on the attack for the majority of play. CU also earned eight corners to just two by Tulsa.
The seventh-ranked Bluejays play host to No. 22 Washington next Saturday night at Morrison Stadium. The Jays will be seeking revenge against the Huskies, as it was UW that ended the CU season in the NCAA Tournament in Seattle last November.
NOTES: CU had not allowed three goals in a match in the five-year history of Morrison Stadium, and hadn't surrendered three at home since 2001 ... CU had allowed just three goals in its first five matches this season ... The 4,023 fans in attendance was the sixth-largest home crowd in school history and moved CU's average attendance this year to 4,008 ... The Bluejays were without the services of freshmen Andrew Duran and Tucker Sindlinger, as both are out with illness.
