Scouting Connecticut (6-2-3, 1-1-0 BE)
The Huskies split results in their first two conference matchups of the season against Akron and Villanova. Most recently, Connecticut fell at home to the Wildcats 2-1.
The lone goal on the Connecticut side came off the foot of Max Gummesson, whose score temporarily gave the Huskies the go-ahead goal. However, a late surge by Villanova produced two goals in the final two minutes, securing a 2-1 Wildcat victory.
The Huskies bolster a diverse attack this season, as nine different Huskies scored at least one goal and 12 tallied at least one assist. Leading the pack for Connecticut is Austin Brummett, who recorded six goals and one assist over 10 matches.Â
Kyle Durham anchors Connecticut's back line as the team's sole goalkeeper this season. In 990 minutes on the pitch, Durham allowed 11 goals — averaging one per game — and executed 44 saves, including four shutouts in 11 games.
Scouting Creighton (5-2-2, 2-0-0):
Building off a six match undefeated run, the Bluejays extended their winning streak on the road to five with a 2-0 win over DePaul.
Miguel Arilla headlined the Bluejay offense with a goal and an assist in the afternoon. The junior remains the Bluejays' offensive leader.Â
Arilla's fourth goal of the season came off a penalty kick in the first half before he recorded his third assist of the season, setting up Matthew Reed for the game-winning goal with just 12 seconds left.
Reed's goal at DePaul was his third of the season, making him Creighton's second-leading offensive contributor.
Before their recent surge, the Bluejays averaged just 0.5 goals per game. Since then, they've posted five straight wins while boosting their scoring average to 2.2, scoring multiple goals in four of those matches.
Between the posts, redshirt freshman Matthew Hudson collected his third consecutive clean sheet and fifth of the season against DePaul. Across 810 minutes in goal, he allowed only nine goals and recorded 25 saves for a .727 save percentage.
Hudson's Scoreless Streak Nears 300 Minutes
Since conceding a goal at the 60:04 mark against Omaha on Sept. 10, goalkeeper Matthew Hudson and the Creighton defense have strung together a 299:56 scoreless streak. Before their current run, the Bluejays held opponents scoreless for 210:24 — a span that stretched from their 0-0 draw with Tulsa through the 31st minute of their match with Omaha.
Creighton Sits Third in Average Attendance in NCAA
The Bluejays currently sit in the number three spot for average attendance on the national scale bringing in 3,009 patrons per game. This number also puts Creighton in the lead for the BIG EAST for average attendance with Connecticut sitting a few spots below at number six nationally and second in the BIG EAST having an average of 2,752 spectators at their matches.Â
The Bluejays also sit within the top 10 in accumulative attendance for the season at number seven with a total of 15,004 attendees. Creighton is also the only BIG EAST team to be within the top 10 nationally for accumulative attendance.
Hudson Claims Second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Honor
Creighton men's soccer collected multiple conference accolades this week as freshman goalkeeper Matthew Hudson was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, while juniors Miguel Arilla and Matthew Reed earned spots on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Hudson continued his stellar debut campaign with his fifth clean sheet in the last six matches and his second straight shutout in BIG EAST play, helping the Bluejays to a 2-0 win at DePaul. The rookie standout tallied four saves, all within the first 15 minutes of the second half, while facing 17 total shots from the Blue Demons, including 12 after halftime. Hudson enters the week riding a scoreless streak of 299 minutes and 56 seconds, the longest of his young career.
Arilla powered the Bluejay attack against DePaul, extending his team lead in goals to four with a successful penalty kick in the 16th minute (15:24). He added an assist in the closing seconds, bursting down the right side before delivering a cross to Reed for Creighton's second goal of the match. Arilla finished with five shots, consistently driving the Bluejay offense.
Reed, Creighton's captain, anchored the back line and played a key role in securing the team's fifth shutout in the last six outings. The junior limited DePaul to just five shots in the opening half, then helped withstand a surge of 12 second-half attempts to preserve the clean sheet.
September to Remember
Since returning to Morrison Stadium on the first day of September, the Bluejays haven't dropped a match, pulling together a 5-0-1 record. In that span, Creighton outscored opponents 11-2 across six matches, averaging 1.8 goals per game while allowing just 0.3. The last time Creighton posted an undefeated month with at least five matches was in September of 2018 as the Bluejays went 6-0, outscoring the opposition 11-2.
