TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona had a great start and finish to the first half, scoring goals in the third and 45th minutes, as the Wildcats defeated the Creighton women's soccer team, 2-0, Friday night at Mulcahy Stadium. With the decision, both teams now have identical 5-4-0 records.
Arizona freshman Jasmin Day scored only 2:27 into the match, as she sent in a header off of a Wildcat corner kick. The goal was Day's team-leading fourth of the season.
Creighton was able to settle down and it looked like the Bluejays would trail by only one heading into halftime. But with nine seconds left in the half, Arizona's Karina Camacho fired a rebound shot into the back of the net for a devastating Wildcat goal. The goal was the second of the campaign for Camacho.
Arizona continued to put pressure on the Jays in the second half, but goalkeeper Kristen Casey was able to give Creighton a chance with four saves in the period. The Bluejays, however, were not able to muster a shot in the second half until the 88th minute.
For the match, Creighton was out-shot by a 14-4 margin. The four shots were the fewest attempted by the Jays all season, as Creighton entered the match as the MVC's leader in the category. All three of the Jays' shots in the first half were on goal, one each by Heather Duncan, Nicole DeLue, and Marcy Gans.
Casey matched a season high with six saves in the match for Creighton. Freshman Danielle Nicolai recorded three saves in goal for the Wildcats.
“The first 45 minutes, I thought we played scared and unorganized,” said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. “The goal right before half was a back-breaker.”
“I thought we played well in the second half, but we dug ourselves in too big of a hole,” said Erickson, adding, “Arizona was the best team we've played so far this season.”
Creighton will now travel across the state to play Arizona State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
