TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 victory over the Creighton women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The loss was the Bluejays' second consecutive setback to a Pac-10 team, dropping Creighton's record to 5-5-0. Arizona State improves to 6-4-0.
Arizona State freshman Karin Volpe got the Sun Devils off to a fast start, scoring the game's first goal in the seventh minute on a re-directed shot past Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey.
The Sun Devils struck again in the 37th minute on a direct kick by junior Kylla Sjoman for her first goal of the season. Arizona State took a 2-0 lead into halftime, and held a decisive 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half.
Arizona State scored two goals within 1:14 in the second half to blow the match open. Senior Alissa Oldenkamp made it 3-0 with her second goal of the season at the 56:32 mark. Volpe then scored her second goal of the match, and fourth of the season, at 57:46 to complete the scoring in the match. Volpe took a cross from Oldenkamp and found the back of the net.
The Sun Devils dominated statistically in the match, as they out-shot Creighton by a 23-5 margin. Arizona State's 10 shots on goal came from seven different players. Sophomores Mary Zapapas and Shawn Magrum, freshman Emily Orbell, and senior Tristan Moser-Bleil each had a shot on goal for the Bluejays in the match.
The shutout loss to the Sun Devils comes after a 2-0 loss to Arizona on Friday, marking the first time since 2004 the Bluejays have been shut out in consecutive matches.
Casey recorded a season-high six saves for the second straight match in goal for Creighton, but also surrendered a season-high four goals. Starter Briana Silvestri and Katie Cochran combined for the Sun Devil shutout.
"My hat's off to Arizona State, they were dynamic in the attack and
punished us for our mistakes," said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. "While we certainly had our moments, it
was not enough to overcome the mistakes. I felt Tristan Moser-Bleil and
Jordan Bruch, to name a few, had solid weekends."
Creighton will now turn its attention to conference play, as the Bluejays will host Missouri State on Friday, Oct. 5, in the MVC opener at Morrison Stadium.
