TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The women's soccer team moved to 11-0 all time vs. Indiana State, as it defeated the Sycamores 3-1, in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday. Emily Orbell led the Bluejay attack with a goal and an assist.
The Bluejays' first goal came in the 22nd minute as Emily Orbell used some fancy footwork to dribble through defenders, before ripping a shot past the goalkeeper from about 18 yards away. It was Orbell's third goal of the season, and her first since Aug. 29 against North Dakota State.
After going into halftime tied, courtesy of a Sycamore goal in the 30th minute, Creighton got back on the attack in the second half, scoring twice in the final 45 minutes. Shawn Magrum scored the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute, from just outside 18 yards away. Her shot took a bounce right past the Indiana State defense to give Magrum her third goal of the year.
The Bluejays capped the scoring in the 57th minute as Marcy Gans scored her 11th goal of the season off an assist from Orbell. With the goal, Gans broke the Creighton record for most points scored in a career with 82. The assist gave Orbell three points on the day, a season high.
The pace of play was stop and go on Saturday, as a combined 27 fouls were called between the two teams, including a combined five cautions. Indiana State had two yellow cards and a red, while Creighton had two yellows.
Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson was pleased how the team played through the physical style Indiana State threw at it. "I was really happy how we came out and continued to fight through the game. Indiana State made us roll up our sleeves in the second half and play through the physicalness of the game."
With the win, the Bluejays improve to 9-4-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The team will continue its current three-game road trip, Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference matchup with Western Illinois at 4:00 p.m.
