Cedar Falls, Iowa - The women's soccer team won its regular season finale, Thursday afternoon, 4-2 over Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Lindsay Vaught led the attack for Creighton, scoring two goals on the day.
Vaught's two goals was a season high for her, and the second time in her career that the senior has scored multiple times in a match. Both of her goals came courtesy off crosses from Mary Zapapas, marking the second time she has had two assists in a game this season
The first goal for Vaught was in the fifth minute as Zapapas sent it to the middle of the field, where Vaught was waiting to finish. Vaught's second goal came in the 62nd minute to break a 2-2 tie, as Zapapas sent a corner kick in Vaught's direction to put Creighton on top for good.
The game marked the second in a row Vaught has had five shots in a game. She also tied Kyla Hoskins for the team-high in shots on goal in the match. Hoskins' five shots on goal were a career high, surpassing her previous high of two set, her freshman year in 2006.
Rounding out the Creighton attack were Claire Zach and Marcy Gans. Zach scored her first goal of the season in the 39th minute to tie the game at 2, after Northern Iowa had scored on two free kicks. Gans scored her 15th goal of the season in the 72nd minute off a free kick from 25 yards away.
Creighton launched 23 shots on the afternoon, making it the third consecutive game the team has had 20 or more shots. That is the longest streak since Oct. 10-17, 2004.
The game also marked the sixth straight game the Bluejays have scored two or more goals, the longest stretch since the end of the 1992 season going into the 1993 season when the team scored multiple goals in seven straight contests (Oct. 31, 1992-Sept. 18, 1993).
“It was a good win this afternoon,” Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson said. “Northern Iowa scored on two free kicks, but we settled down and took control of the game.”
Creighton will return to action on Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, hosted by Creighton at Morrison Stadium. The Bluejays will enter as either the #4 or #5 seed, and will face either Missouri State or Indiana State.
