OMAHA, Neb. ? Freshman Kellie Nelson scored all of her career-high 16 points in the first half to lead four Bluejays in double figures as the Creighton women's basketball team snapped Evansville's 10-game winning streak with an 82-71 victory at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Sunday afternoon. The Bluejays shot 50 percent from the field in the victory, which improves them to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Purple Aces (16-8, 10-3 MVC) jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening 1:16 of play and kept the edge until the Bluejays tied the score at 13, 5:33 into the game. Evansville pushed ahead to its largest lead of the game, up 25-18 with 10 minutes left in the half. Creighton responded with a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the game, up 28-27 after a Kelsey Crites jumper with 7:34 remaining.
Evansville countered to go back up 34-30 with just over five minutes left in the half. CU closed the half on a 12-4 run to claim a 42-38 halftime lead. Nelson spearheaded the CU success in the opening 20 minutes, as she played extended minutes due to CU's starting center, Kristina Voss, limited because of foul trouble. The rookie center scored 16 points and had seven rebounds in just 11 minutes, on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 at the free-throw line in the half.
The Bluejays maintained their lead in the second half, as they shot 53.8 percent from the field after the break. When UE's Courtney Felke drained a jumper just over three minutes into the second half, she brought the Aces within three. UE would get as close as three just one more time in the half as the Bluejays handed the Aces their first loss since Jan. 10.
Creighton hit 30-of-60 shots in the game, its third game this year with at least a 50 percent field goal percentage - all wins. CU also went 17-of-19 from the free-throw line, including 10-for-10 in the second half. The Jays dominated the inside, out-rebounding UE 48-25 and out-scoring the Aces in the paint, 46-24.
In addition to her career-high point total, Nelson also logged a career-best eight rebounds in the win. Fellow rookie Kelsey Woodard added 15 points and tied her career-high with a game-high six assists. Sara Cain equalled her season-high with 14 points, making six of her seven attempts from the floor. Voss finished with 12 points.
UE's Shannon Novosel led all players with 18 points and had three blocked shots. Ashley Austin and Rebekah Parker had 14 points each for the Aces, while Parker led her team with five assists.
Sam Schuett grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and had a career-high three blocked shots, to go along with her six points and two assists.
After improving to 9-1 at home this year, the Bluejays will now play four of their final six MVC games on the road, beginning with a Thursday game at Northern Iowa. The Bluejays and Panthers will tip off from Cedar Falls at 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
