OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore T.J. Roemmich blasted a two-out, two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a one-run deficit and give the Creighton baseball team a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Northern Colorado Tuesday at the CU Sports Complex. Roemmich added an RBI single in the fourth inning, while shortstop Vicente Cafaro added two RBIs for the Bluejays.
Creighton improves to 12-4 with the win, while the Bears drop to 5-12 with the tough-luck loss. Bob Lackovic (1-0) got the win in relief while Kevin Dooley picked up his first save, in a game where Northern Colorado out-hit the Jays, 7-5.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead with a two-run first inning, thanks to a two-run double by cleanup hitter Kevin Sandberg. Creighton answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Cafaro.
The Bluejays nodded the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning on Roemmich's first big hit of the game. After right fielder Nick Nordgren walked and advanced to second with one out, Roemmich ripped a double down the right field line to plate the equalizer.
Northern Colorado jumped back ahead with a two-run sixth inning as a walk and back-to-back singles gave the Bears a 3-2 lead. An RBI single by Erik Hegstad then made it 4-2.
UNC looked set to add to its lead in the seventh inning with runners at first and second and one out, but Creighton was able to turn a double play to get out of the jam.
Great individual effort by second baseman Michael Lam helped draw the Jays within one run in the bottom of the seventh. Lam stretched a well-placed ball to right field into a double, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Cafaro.
Northern Colorado appeared headed to the ninth inning with the lead after pitcher Eric Skufca retired the first two Creighton batters of the inning and induced a groundball to third base. However, UNC first baseman Chad Murray dropped the throw to extend the inning for Roemmich. The left handed batter took the third pitch he saw deep over the wall for a stunning change of events.
Dooley retired the Bears in order in the top of the ninth on 10 pitches to earn his first save as a Bluejay. Lackovic picked up the win with scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. Starting pitcher Joe Bonfe lasted 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on just one hit, but he allowed four walks.
Roemmich was in line for the loss on the mound before his heroics with the bat. He allowed UNC's final two runs on only one hit in 2.1 innings. Pat Venditte came in to throw one scoreless inning, allowing two hits. Bluejay pitching walked six batters and hit another two in the game.
Skufca (0-1) was the tough-luck loser, as he was also credited with a blown save. Starter Joe Sawicki was impressive, allowing two runs on only three hits in six innings. He left with a 4-2 lead after 98 pitches.
Creighton and Northern Colorado will meet again on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the CU Sports Complex.
