OMAHA, Neb. ? Sophomore pitcher Tara Oltman allowed just three base runners and did not allow a ball to reach the outfield in Creighton's 2-0, two-hit shutout of Drake Wednesday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex. The Bluejay ace improved to 27-6 by hurling her 10th shutout of the season in helping Creighton improve to 37-14 overall and 15-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Oltman retired the first nine batters she faced before Marilyn Buss led off the fourth inning with a bunt single. Buss advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded there as the only Bulldog to reach second base in the game.
Meanwhile, Drake (22-20, 11-6 MVC) ace hurler Brynne Dordel matched the defending MVC Pitcher of the Year through the first three innings. She also carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, before Bailey Dawson led off the frame with a first-pitch single up the middle.
Dawson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on an infield hit by TJ Eadus, which was too hot for Drake third baseman Carrie Hatfield to handle. Dordel loaded the bases when she hit Michelle Graner with a pitch. Designated player Cassidy Nee then blooped a single over the drawn-in Bulldog infield to drive in the first run of the game.
Creighton tacked on an insurance run, as Renae Sinkler led off the sixth inning by lining a full-count pitch over the right center field wall for her sixth home run of the season. The hit moved the CU first baseman's career-best hitting streak to 16 games.
Oltman mowed down the Bulldogs in order in the seventh to wrap up her 27th win and establish a new career-high for victories in a season. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one in the game, while both base hits she allowed never left the infield and the CU outfielders never had a ball reach them in Oltman's 26th complete game of the year.
Dordel dropped to 15-8 in the loss, as she allowed just four CU hits, walked three and struck out nine in defeat.
The Bluejays return to the diamond on Saturday when they play host to Indiana State for a noon doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex. The Jays and Sycamores conclude their three-game MVC series on Sunday at noon.
