OMAHA, Neb. ? Creighton run-ruled Indiana State 8-0 to open Saturday's doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex, before topping the Sycamores 4-1 to finish off the softball sweep in the nightcap. Bluejay sophomore pitcher Tara Oltman again dominated the opposition, allowing two hits and facing just one batter over the minimum in eight combined innings of work in the twin bill, as she tied the school record with her 28th victory and then captured her sixth save of the season.
In the opener, CU went ahead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Pitcher Meagan McCurdy bobbled a ball hit to her by Michelle Graner to start the inning. Graner would eventually score on a two-out RBI bunt single by Jessica Wakasugi.
The Bluejays (39-14, 17-3 MVC) plated three more runs in the third inning to pull away from the Sycamores (19-25-1, 7-12 MVC). Jessi Jadlowski reached on an infield single to start the inning and advanced to second base on the same play as ISU shortstop Meredith Simpson threw the ball wildly to first base. Jadlowski would score on an RBI single by TJ Eadus. Eadus and Renae Sinkler, who had singled to extend her hitting streak to 17 games earlier in the frame, came around to score on an RBI double by Graner to push the CU lead to four.
CU ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Jays racked up four singles and benefitted from two ISU errors to score four runs and end the game due to the run-rule. Bailey Dawson reached base on Simpson's third error of the game to start the inning. Sinkler followed with a single to right and the pair moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Eadus. Graner then drove in the first run of the inning on a single to center. Amanda Hess followed with a pinch-hit single to drive in another run. CU's third straight single and an error ended the game. Michelle Koch singled up the middle to drive in CU's seventh run and the eighth run, in the form of pinch-runner Lau Emmsley-Chang, would come all the way around from first base to score as ISU center fielder Reva LeDune had trouble keeping her feet on the play.
Oltman hurled a two-hitter in the first game, facing the minimum of 15 batters in the five-inning affair, as the Bluejays turned a pair of double plays in the game. The Bluejay ace struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced in her 11th shutout of the year. She is 28-6 on the year, tying the CU single-season victory mark, twice established by All-American Tammy Nielsen (2004, 2005).
McCurdy (11-12) allowed nine hits and eight runs, only four of which were earned, in the opening loss for ISU.
Graner finished game one 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Sinkler was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.
In the night cap, the Bluejays scored single tallies in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the 4-1 triumph.
Koch smacked her fifth home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the second inning to start the scoring for the Jays.
ISU tied the game when Sam Markowski connected for her fifth homer of the year, a solo shot to left in the fourth inning.
Hess again pinch-hit in the nightcap and again drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Jays a 2-1 lead and give herself the lead she needed to pick up her sixth win of the year.
Dawson turned a leadoff walk in the fifth inning into another CU run, as she stole home with two outs in the inning. Graner aided in the steal, as she took off from first base to draw a high throw from Markowski behind the plate. Graner scampered back to first base and Dawson crossed the plate with a steal. Jadlowksi added an RBI triple in the seventh inning to conclude scoring in the doubleheader.
Hess (6-6) pitched four innings and struck out five in the win. Oltman pitched three hitless innings of relief to pick up her sixth save.
Jadlowski finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in the nightcap, while Koch was 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored. Sinkler's hitting streak came to an end in game two, as she ended 0-for-2 and dropped down a sacrifice in her final plate appearance of the game.
Katie Armour (4-9) took the loss for ISU, as she allowed eight hits and four earned runs, walked three and struck out three. Simpson went 2-for-2 to account for half of ISU's hits in the second game.
The Bluejays will look for the series sweep on Sunday at noon. A CU win would clinch at least a share of the MVC regular-season title with one weekend still remaining in the season.
