OMAHA, Neb. -- Steve Winkelmann laced a two-out single through the right side of the infield to score Michael Lam from second base in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Creighton baseball team to a 6-5 walk-off victory over Indiana State Friday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
Creighton improved to 31-17 overall and 14-8 in MVC play, while the Sycamores dropped to 14-30 and 6-13. Pat Venditte (7-3) picked up the win, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Sycamore reliever David Gurbach (2-1) suffered the loss despite a strong performance, as he threw the final five innings and allowed just four hits.
The Jays rallied from an eighth-inning deficit to force extra innings, as Nick Nordgren singled home Joe Servais with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to even the score at 5-5. Lam worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 12th and advanced to second on a two-out walk by Darin Ruf. Winkelmann then took an 0-1 pitch and ripped a shot to the right side of the infield. ISU second baseman Ryan Strausborger got a glove on the ball, but it ricochetted into foul territory allowing Lam to easily score from second.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Strausborger led off the game with a triple and came around to score on Chris Schmidt's RBI groundout. Nick Ciolli then ripped an RBI double to give ISU an early 2-0 advantage. Creighton responded with four straight hits to begin the bottom of the first. A RBI triple by Elliot Soto scored Robbie Knight, who led off with a single. Soto was then plated on an RBI single by Ruf.
Servais led off the second inning with a double and scored on a Brett Mieras RBI single to right field, giving the Jays a 3-2 lead. The Sycamores would respond with a run in the top of the third to even things at 3-3, as Strausborger singled and scored.
The game would remain deadlocked until the seventh inning, when Creighton regained the lead. Servais kick-started the inning with a leadoff single. After a sacrifice and a wild pitch advanced him to third, Servais scored on a groundout by Lam.
Indiana State battled back to take a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. CU reliever Kevin Dooley allowed a walk and a single before giving way to Venditte with one out. Venditte then surrendered an RBI single to Brian Jett and allowed ISU to take the lead on a well-executed squeeze bunt by Sean Osborne.
Nordgren's two-out single in the eighth tied the game at 5-5, but Creighton had a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. Servais again singled to lead off the frame and advanced to third with one out. However, Lam and Knight both struck out swinging to end the threat and extend the game to extra innings.
Venditte set down the Sycamores in order in the 9th, 10th and 11th innings to allow for Winkelmann's heroics in the 12th.
CU starting pitcher Jeremy Hauer turned in another quality performance, leaving in line for the win after seven innings. He allowed three runs, but only two earned, on seven hits. ISU starter Michael Manus gave up four runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings.
The teams will continue the series with a 2 PM contest on Saturday at the CU Sports Complex.
