TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State used its home court advantage to end the game on an 11-2 run to come from behind and top the Creighton women's basketball team 56-54 Saturday afternoon at the Hulman Center. Kelsey Woodard led all players with 27 points, making 7-of-12 three-pointers in the loss. The loss drops the Bluejays to 0-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play and 5-8 on the year, while the Sycamores move to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in MVC play.
Creighton led by six at the half and led by as many as eight in the second half, including a 50-42 edge with 6:36 to play. With the Bluejays up 52-45, ISU began its comeback. Momentum swung on a controversial call with 3:37 to play, as Megan Neuvirth was pulled to the ground after pulling in a rebound on the defensive end. Rather than a foul being whistled against the home team, Neuvirth was called for a travel to keep the ball on ISU's offensive end.
ISU's Kelsey Luna drained a three-pointer coming out of a timeout following the turnover to cut CU's lead to four. Bianca Jarrett grabbed a rebound off a Bluejay miss and went the length of the court to make a layup and bring ISU within two, down 52-50 with 2:58 to go. Kara Schilli then converted a three-point play following another Bluejay miss to give the Sycamores their first lead since 3-0. ISU hit one-of-two free-throws with 1:37 left to go ahead 54-52.
On CU's offensive end, Kristina Voss had her shot blocked to set up an out-of-bounds play for Woodard. The Bluejay sophomore cut along the baseline to catch and shoot, tying the game with 24.5 seconds left on the clock.
Creighton forced the ball away from Luna on ISU's end, but Deja Mattox cut to the basket and dished to an open Shannon Thomas for the game-winning lay-up with 5.4 seconds left.
Chevelle Herring went the length of the court in that span and got off a game-tying attempt in the lane, but it fell short off the front of the rim to drop the Jays to 0-2 in the MVC for just the second time in the last eight years.
Woodard, who drained 6-of-9 three-pointers in the first half, finished 7-of-12 from three-point range for her season-high 27 points. Her seven treys were the most by a Bluejay since current assistant coach Dayna Finch drained seven against Iowa on Dec. 28, 2003. The sophomore also added a season-high nine rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes.
Neuvirth pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to help the Bluejays out-rebound the Sycamores 39-28. Neuvirth also added eight points, four assists and two steals in the loss.
Schilli finished with a team-best 17 points for ISU. Jarrett scored all nine of her points in the second half for the victors.
ISU made 12-of-17 shots at the free-throw line, while CU went to the line only six times, but made five at the charity stripe.
Creighton returns home following its three-game road trip in search of its first Valley win when it plays host to Missouri State on Thursday night. CU and MSU will tip at the Omaha Civic Auditorium at 7:05 p.m.
