OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton played a man down for the final 30 minutes of the match, but overcame a 1-0 deficit to post a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Evansville Saturday night at Morrison Stadium. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bluejays scored twice in the second half to bring home another victory, with Ethan Finlay scoring his team-leading third goal of the season to tie the score in the 58th minute and Jeff Thayer scoring the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
The win snaps Evansville's six-match winning streak, dropping the Purple Aces to 7-3-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Creighton improves to 4-2-1 on the season, 2-1-0 in Valley action.
The Aces struck first, as 6-foot-7 defender Jarrett Robbins knocked in his own rebound in the 18th minute of play. After his initial shot was saved by Bluejay keeper Brian Holt, Robbins headed in the UE goal, his third of the year.
Evansville held on to that 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but the Jays held a 6-4 shot advantage. The Aces were whistled for 16 fouls, to seven by the Jays in the opening half.
The Bluejays fought back in the second half, scoring the equalizer in the 58th minute. Finlay took advantage of a loose ball in front of the net after Seth Sinovic had drilled a shot off of the near post. Sinovic's shot rebounded in front of the net, where Josh Moran settled the ball enough for Finlay to knock it into the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Thomas Gjoesund was issued a red card in the 60th minute following a collision with the UE goalkeeper, thus making it that much harder for Creighton to score two goals in a match for the first time this season.
Creighton lost no rhythm despite playing a man down, as the Jays continued to control possession and attempt more shots than the Aces in the second half. Thayer's determination and ball control earned him the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. After taking a long pass from Kyle Deremer, Thayer muscled through his defender and found himself alone with UE keeper Phil Boerger. The senior from Omaha crushed the close range shot past Boerger for his first goal of the season and first game-winner since 2007.
"I was really proud of our guys tonight," said head coach Bob Warming. "Now we just need to capture that energy and passion we played with in the second half and keep that going."
Holt made three saves in goal for the Jays, including two on point-blank shots in the second half. His final save on Tyler Crawford's shot in the 79th minute preserved the victory. UE would later hit the cross bar in the 86th minute, giving Creighton a much-needed break in the win.
Creighton returns to action on the road when it travels to Missouri State for a midweek match. The Jays will be seeking revenge for their only MVC loss this year, a 1-0 MSU win on Sept. 19 in Omaha. CU and MSU will kick off at 4 p.m. in Springfield, Mo., on Wednesday.
