Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Despite dominating possession, the Creighton men's soccer team was unable to come away with a victory at Missouri State on Wednesday afternoon, settling for a scoreless tie at Plaster Field for the second straight season. The Bluejays out-shot the Bears, 12-6, and had a 12-0 corner kick advantage, but move to 4-2-2 and 2-1-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play with the draw.
After struggling to get any offense going in the first half, managing just one shot in the first 45 minutes, the Bluejays came out on the attack in the second half. Creighton unloaded nine shots and held the Bears (5-3-2, 1-1-1 MVC) to just one shot in the second half. MSU's lone shot in the second half, was not attempted until the 87th minute.
Ethan Finlay attempted both of Creighton's shots on goal in the second half, including one just 22 seconds after halftime. Alex Riggs stopped Finlay's second shot on goal in the 78th minute, to help preserve the shutout.
“I thought of the four halves we played against Missouri State this year, that our second half today was easily the best soccer we've played,” said head coach Bob Warming. “We looked sharp, we looked committed and I really thought we were going to get a goal. We created a lot of chances in the second half, but it's always tough to get a goal in against a packed defense.”
Neither team managed to get a shot away in the first overtime, while the Jays took a pair of shots in the second overtime. Missouri State was able to get a shot on goal in the second overtime, but Bluejay keeper Brian Holt made his third save of the match to help earn his fifth shutout in eight matches this year.
Creighton will look to keep its three-match unbeaten streak alive when it returns home for its next two matches. The Bluejays play host to Eastern Illinois this Saturday at Morrison Stadium. Kick off between the Jays and Panthers is set for 7 p.m.
