MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Creighton baseball team (1-7) lost to Kansas State 12-1, Tuesday afternoon at Tointon Stadium.
Kansas State got on the board in the bottom of the first when Carter Jurica beat out a ground ball to shortstop. He came around to score when cleanup hitter Justin Bloxom hit a double to straight away center off the centerfield wall.
The lead became 2-0 in favor of KSU in the second inning as right fielder Jordan Cruz hit his first double of the season to right field scoring Nick Martini.
The Wildcats scored their third run in as many innings when Bloxom hit a solo shot to left, making it 3-0 K-State.
Creighton put together its first offensive threat of the day in the fourth inning as Vicente Cafaro sent a one-out single to center. Runners were on second and third when former Wildcat Robbie Knight hit a ball to right field that skipped sideways past Cruz. A Darin Ruf walk loaded the bases, but the Bluejays couldn't capitalize as T.J. Roemmich struck out looking and Nick Becker hit a ground ball to first base that Bloxom dove to stop before flipping it to pitcher A.J. Morris, ending the rally.
Kansas State put together yet another rally in the bottom of the fourth when leadoff man Drew Biery hit a routine popup to shortstop. Unfortunately for the Bluejays, the ball got caught up in the wind and went over Creighton shortstop, Elliot Soto's head. Biery hustled and made it into second on the play, before scoring on Nick Martini's double down the right field line. The Wildcats extended the lead even further on Cruz's two-run home run, making the game 7-0.
After a scoreless fifth, KSU was able to tack on another run in the sixth as it had runners on second and third with one out. Adam Muenster sent a bouncing ball just pass the outstretched glove of CU first baseman Darin Ruf for a two-run double. Bloxom then hit his second double of the day, bringing home Muenster, and putting the K-State advantage at 10-0. Justin King was the next hitter, and he hit his third home run of the season, capping the scoring for the Wildcats at 12-0.
The Bluejays lone run of the day came in the bottom of the eighth as Scott Thornburg hit his second-career double. He got to third on an Elliot Soto single, and came home on Vicente Cafaro's sacrifice fly to center.
Starter Jonas Dufek (0-2) got the loss for Creighton. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, in just three innings of work.
The Bluejays will be back in action on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in Conway, S.C., against Stony Brook as part of the Caravelle Resort Classic.
