WICHITA, Kan. - The Creighton baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Wchita State, dropping decisions of 5-2 and 11-1.
Game 1
The Bluejays took a 1-0 lead in the third with runners on first and second. Robbie Knight hit into what looked to be an inning-ending double play but Wichita State shortstop Tyler Grimes threw the ball away trying to get Knight at first. The errant throw allowed Scott Thornburg to score rounding third.
Creighton threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases with just one out. Unfortunately for the Jays, Thornburg grounded into a 1-2-3, inning-ending double play.
Wichita State managed to tie it up in the second, as Clint McKeever doubled to straight-away center scoring Will Baez from first. Vicente Cafaro then prevented another run from scoring as he dove to his right snaring a seeing-eye ground ball up the middle and flipping with his glove to Elliot Soto to get the force out at second, ending the inning.
The Shockers took the lead in the fifth when Baez reached on an infield single scoring Grimes. McKeever then homered to straight-away center, making it 4-1.
Chance Sossamon lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, to make it 5-1 WSU.
CU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth, however Ian Dike grounded out into a 1-2-3 double play. It looked like Dike might reach on a throwing error, but was called out for interference. Cafaro then singled up the middle, allowing Vitale to score, and it was 5-2 after eight.
Game 2
Wichita State took an early lead in the first inning, when Ryan Engrav hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cody Lassley. Ryan Jones then hit an infield single that scored Will Baez and made it 2-0.
Lassley then hit a single just past Elliot Soto in the second that scored Chance Sossamon. Baez then hit a liner of his own just past the outstretched arms of Soto, that he hustled to advance to second and score Tyler Grimes, making it 4-0.
There was a scary moment for the Bluejays in the fourth when Robbie Knight was hit in the head by a pitch. He would be removed from the game and replaced by Joey Bowens.
WSU extended its lead on a Bret Bascue single in the fifth, scoring Ryan Jones. Grimes then hit a bases-clearing double making it 7-0 in favor of the Shockers after five.
It became 10-0 on a bases-loaded clearing double down the left field line on Chris O'Brien's double down the left field line.
CU's lone run came when T.J. Roemmich tripled to open the top of the seventh. Darin Ruf drove him in on a ground out to second, making it 10-1.
The Shockers ended the game in the bottom of the seventh when Grimes doubled to lead off the inning and stole third. He scored the final run of the day
