OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton and Iowa State battled to a 0-0 draw in both teams' season opener Friday evening at Morrison Stadium. Alicia Montgomery posted six saves for the Jays while Ann Gleason recorded five for the Cyclones.
It was an evenly played contest throughout, as Creighton (0-0-1) out-shot the Cyclones (0-0-1) 17-14. The best chances for both teams came in the second half with both squads pressing for the match's first goal.
At the 53-minute mark, Brittney Neumann got around an Iowa State defender with a small window to shoot. Neumann fired off a left-footed shot that hit the side of the net, keeping the game tied at zero.
Just over 12 minutes later, the Cyclones pushed the ball into the top of the Creighton box, with Elisa Berzins momentarily finding an opening after several touches in the area, but her shot was blasted high.
Another Cyclone opportunity came near the 72:00 minute mark of the match, as Adriana O'Neill had an opening near the right post after a well-placed through ball from Kelsey Calvert. O'Neill tried to beat Montgomery low, but the Bluejay keeper turned the shot away with a sprawling save.
The Bluejays recorded their first tie in a season opener, moving to 11-9-1 in program history. Their home opener record went to 13-5-3 and their all-time record against the Cyclones is now 0-2-1.
Jordan Wagner led the Cyclones with four shots, one of which was on goal, while Andrea Zuniga posted five shots for the Bluejays.
Iowa State will have a week off before hosting South Dakota State in their home opener. Creighton's next game will also be against SDSU, as the Jays continue non-conference play on Sunday with a 1:00 pm tilt in Brookings, S.D.
