OMAHA, Neb. – The sixth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team knocked off 23rd-ranked Cal Poly, 1-0, Saturday night in front of 3,068 at Morrison Stadium. Seth Sinovic's goal in the 81st minute proved to be the difference, as the Bluejays upped their mark to 1-0-1 on the season, dropping the Mustangs to 0-2-0.
In a defensive battle, it was a short corner kick and perfectly placed shot which changed the match and gave the Jays the result. Kris Clark played Creighton's sixth corner kick of the match short to Ethan Finlay to help set up the game's lone tally. Finlay played the ball to Sinovic and the fifth-year senior captain calmly surveyed his options before blasting a shot from just beyond the top left corner of the 18-yard box, past a diving Brett Finkelstein in goal for his third career game-winning score.
“I give Cal Poly a lot of credit, they came in with a tremendous mentality of wanting to fight and play to win this game,” said head coach Bob Warming after his team's first win of the year. “We don't have many teams come in here with that type of approach and I appreciate them coming in and playing a great college soccer match. That's a tough up-and-coming program.”
The Bluejays edged the Mustangs in shots, attempting 13 to Cal Poly's eight, while both sides took six corner kicks in the tightly-contested top-25 match.
Cal Poly only knocked one shot attempt on goal in the match, as Brian Holt turned away Tim White's shot in the 67th minute for his only save in the shutout.
Holt has now logged 14 shutouts in 21 career matches, including two shutouts to start this season after his school record-setting 12 last year.
The win moves Creighton's unbeaten streak against California schools to 11, going 8-0-3 against Golden State programs since 2003. The Jays also improved to an impressive 13-1-1 at Morrison Stadium all-time against the top-25.
Sinovic now has three game-winning goals of his six career scores. Dating back to last year, Sinovic has accounted for CU's last three game-winning goals as he scored both game-winners in the NCAA Tournament for the Jays in 2008.
The Bluejays now take a rare two-week break before returning to game action when they play host to Missouri State to open the Missouri Valley Conference season. The Sept. 19 MVC opener will be the earliest conference opener for the Jays since 1993.
