OMAHA, Neb. - After an evenly played 15 minutes, the Creighton women's soccer team pulled away with a flurry. Mary Zapapas and Brittney Neumann scored 30 seconds apart, and a three-point afternoon from Emily Orbell propelled the Jays past Lamar 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium.
"It was great to see us respond after the big win on Friday [against Cal State Northridge]," said assistant coach Ileana Moschos. "It took us awhile to get going, but after we got our feet under us we created a lot of dangerous opportunities and our decision making in the back was solid," Moschos added.
After the first goal, the Jays controlled the action, out-shooting the Cardinals 20-3 from that point on. That included a second half in which Lamar was held without a shot, as it was the second straight game CU held its opponent to zero shots in the second half.
A Kelly Connolly shot in the 22nd minute that hit the crossbar, and a waived off goal three minutes later seemed to jump-start the Bluejay offense, as they took the lead in the 28th minute on Zapapas' first goal of the season.
Eden Hingwing started the play with a long free kick from Bluejay territory into the Lamar box. A Lamar defender stopped the ball, but it fell right to Zapapas who beat Cardinal keeper Jennifer Gibbs to her right for a 1-0 Bluejay lead.
It was all Jays from that point on as Neumann came right back 30 seconds later at 28:27 to make it 2-0. Neumann took a cross-field pass from Orbell and finished in the right corner from 15 yards out for her team leading 15th goal.
Orbell posted her second goal of the season in the 66th minute to punctuate the Jay victory. She blasted a shot from 20 yards out that beat a diving Gibbs for the final 3-0 margin.
Gibbs fell to 0-6-0 on the year for Lamar, saving seven shots. Alicia Montgomery finished with three saves for Creighton, as she improved to 5-1-1. It was Montgomery's sixth shutout of her career.
Creighton's back in action next weekend at the adidas Husker Classic in Lincoln, Neb. They will take on Akron at 3:00 p.m. Friday and North Dakota at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
