Men's Tennis Closes Weekend at MVC Individual Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - Creighton wrapped up a successful run at the State Farm MVC Individual Men's Tennis Championships Sunday afternoon, as Sean Mathison took second in flight seven singles, and Billy Paluch and J.T. Christian were runners-up at flight 1 doubles.
"We played very strong today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Overall, I thought we had a great tournament and we proved to ourselves that we can play with anybody in the conference," Lilly added.
The day started with doubles play, with Paluch and Christian beating the top-seeded Illinois State team of Alexander Pelaez and Filip Miljevic, 9-7. The pair fell in the final to Wichita State's Sven Kasper and Vlad Marinescu, 8-4.
The flight seven final featured Creighton's Mathison and Illinois State's Michael Hobson. Mathison could not win his fourth match of the tournament, as he fell 6-3 and 6-3.
Wichita State led the six Valley teams with five champions (three singles and two doubles). Illinois State claimed three titles while Drake tallied two.
The Bluejays will be back in action on Friday, February 12 when they host UMKC in their home opnener at the Hanscom-Brandeis Indoor Tennis Center. Play will start at 7:00 p.m.
