WATERLOO, Iowa - After falling behind in just the eighth minute of the match to Northern Iowa, Creighton scored the next three goals of the match and held off a Panther comeback, improving to 9-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the Valley. Brittney Neumann led the day with a goal and an assist, while Erin Gunther and Macy Mauer also netted goals on the day and Andrea Zuniga had an assist. The Panthers fall to 2-9-1 on the season and 0-2-0 in the MVC.
The Jays fell behind just over seven minutes (7:24) into the match when Nicole Ferlito scored her first goal of the season when putting the ball in the back of the right side. Creighton evened up the match in the 11th minute when Gunther scored her fourth goal of the season.
Creighton then used a combination of shots to score its second goal of the match. Andrea Zuniga took a shot that hit off the crossbar and was rebounded by Neumann, who put it in the back of the net. It gives Neumann a team leading six goals on the season, and Zuniga three assists.
The Jays took five shots in the first half while Northern Iowa took six. Gunther led the charge with two shots in the half, both on goal. Montgomery recorded three saves and allowed one through the half. The Panthers had the only two corner kicks of the half, but couldn't put either in the net.
Creighton started out the second half aggressive offensively, with Zuniga, Gunther and Neumann each taking a shot on goal in the first five minutes of the half. The Jays scored in the 60th minute when Mauer scored her second goal of the season. Neumann was credited with the assist, giving her four on the year.
A penalty kick would give the Panthers their second goal of the match, and Ferlito was called upon and scored her second goal of the match. Creighton opponents are now three for three on penalty kicks this season.
The Jays finished the match with 13 shots while Northern Iowa also fired off 13 shots. Montgomery recorded four saves and allowed two goals playing all 90 minutes in the net. Lauren Potzman of Northern Iowa had six saves on the day while allowing three goals.
"I was happy with our performance today for the most part," said Creighton coach Bruce Erickson. "We scored some quality goals and played great soccer at times but obviously we are disappointed we conceded two goals. UNI played very hard today but we should have made the most of our chances to blow open the game."
The Jays return home on October 9 and welcome the Purple Aces of Evansville in a Missouri Valley Conference match. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. from Morrison Stadium. Evansville leads the current series 14-10-1, but Creighton won last year's match 4-1.
