OMAHA, Neb. -Creighton used the cool Midwest weather to its advantage Sunday beating Cal State Fullerton 3-0 at Morrison Stadium. Kelly Connolly and Lauren Cingoranelli each scored a goal on the day, while Emily Orbell had two assists, bringing her team high assists to five on the year. Alicia Montgomery played all 90 minutes in goal, recording 8 saves and earning her second shutout of the season. The Jays improve to 6-2-2.
Creighton scored halfway through the first half when Connolly headed the ball into the back of the net after Orbell sent in a ball from the near side. The play happened just seconds after one of the seven corner kicks the Jays had on the day. The goal is the first of the season for Connolly and the fourth assist of the season for Orbell.
The second goal for Creighton came in the 26th minute, when Brittney Neumann applied pressure on the defense of Fullerton, forcing the defense to make a play backwards and the ball slid past the goalkeeper into the right side of the net. It was the first own goal on the season.
Creighton took five shots in the half, four of which were on goal. Andrea Zuniga had three shots in the half, two of which were on goal. The Titans took three shots in the in the first period, with two being on goal. Creighton goalkeeper Montgomery had two saves in 45 minutes and didn't allow a goal.
The second half was very physical soccer and only one goal was scored between the two teams. Creighton's Cingoranelli blooped a ball over the outstretched arms of Titan goalkeeper Jordan Santos for the third goal of the match, also Cingoranelli's third of the season. Orbell also assisted that goal, sending the ball up the middle of the field for Cingoranelli to run onto.
Leading the Jays on the day was Zuniga with four shots, two on goal. Four other Bluejays took shots, to add up to the eight shots on the day compared to the 12 of Fullerton. Creighton has now been outshot 34-21 in the last two matches, but has outscored Wyoming and Fullerton 9-2. The Jays had seven corner kicks versus the three of Cal State Fullerton.
"All-in-all, despite the decent win on Friday night, I thought we played much better today," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We came out and were organized, won the ball in the open field. Our third goal sequence fell together great. I think we are just starting to put some good, quality performances together."
Creighton is in action at home for the final time on Wednesday when they host UMKC to Morrison Stadium. This is the final non-conference match before the Jays start the Valley conference schedule on Sept. 26 when they travel to Indiana State. Creighton will take on the UMKC Kangaroos on their own pitch with a scheduled 7:00 p.m. start.
