WICHITA, Kan. - Creighton entered Friday night ranked 12th in the NCAA with 14.1 turnovers per game, but committed 25 turnovers in a 60-51 loss at Wichita State Friday night.  The loss snaps Creighton's 11-game winning streak in the series with the Shockers, and drops the Bluejays to 12-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play on the season.  Sam Schuett led the Bluejays with 19 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season in the loss.
Wichita State (13-13, 7-8 MVC) opened the game with the first two points and never trailed in the first half, as the Bluejays' troubles with turnovers began early. Creighton had six turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, as the Shockers built a 15-8 lead. The Jays climbed back into the game with the next seven points to pull even at 15 with 5:44 left in the first half, but the Shockers responded with the next five points.
WSU carried a 28-23 lead into halftime, as Creighton turned the ball over 13 times in the first half. Creighton shot 40 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, but made just 1-of-8 (.125) three-pointers in that span.
Creighton (18-9, 12-4 MVC) fell behind by seven right after halftime, but scored eight unanswered points to take its first lead of the game up 31-30 with less than three minutes off the clock in the second half. Three-pointers from Kelsey Woodard and Schuett keyed the 8-0 run.
The Shockers responded to Creighton's run with a 7-0 burst to go back ahead 37-31. A 13-3 run by the Bluejays over the next four minutes gave them their largest lead of the night, up 44-40 with 8:11 to play following a pair of Schuett free throws. But the Jays would score just two points over the next seven minutes, while the Shockers rattled off a 15-2 game-changing run. Creighton went from the 9:31 mark until 42 seconds remained in the game without hitting a field goal, going 0-for-5 from the field with six turnovers during the Shocker run.
WSU's Haleigh Lankster led all players with 20 points, including 18 in the second half. Lankster was 8-for-12 from the field and swiped three of the Shockers' 10 steals. Jazimen Gordon added a career-high 17 points off the bench for the Shockers.
Schuett recorded her 17th career double-double with a team-best 19 points and 10 rebounds. Woodard finished with 10 points and tied her career-high with seven assists for the second time in three games. The senior guard didn't score for the final 18:53 of the game and didn't have an assist after the 10:39 mark.
Creighton out-rebounded the Shockers 42-22, including 15 offensive rebounds for the Jays. Those rebounds helped the Bluejays out-score the Shockers 16-4 in second-chance points. Turnovers were key however, as the Jays committed 25, their most in an MVC game since giving the ball away 27 times at Evansville on Jan. 22, 2006. WSU out-scored the Jays 24-15 on points off turnovers, as the Shockers committed only 10 give-aways, after entering the game averaging 18 per game.
The Bluejays will look to rebound from their first loss to Wichita State since Feb. 4, 2006, when they travel to Missouri State (18-9, 9-6 MVC) on Sunday. CU's game at MSU will be televised live on Fox Sports Midwest and tip at 12:05.
