LINCOLN, Neb. - The 13th-ranked Nebraska softball team defeated Creighton 7-2 at Bowlin Stadium Wednesday night, behind a solid pitching performance from Ashley Hagemann. The Husker hurler struck out the first seven Bluejay batters of the game and fanned 13 in the win. Solo home runs by Amy Baker and Christa Ruf served as the only two Creighton hits on the night.
Nebraska (28-4) led 2-0 after its first two batters of the game, as Nikki Haget had a perfectly placed single at the third base bag over a pulled in Malloree Grove to lead off the game. Freshman sensation Taylor Edwards then crushed a full-count offering from Becca Changstrom over the center field fence for her team-leading 14th home run of the spring, setting a Nebraska rookie record for homers. Changstrom settled down to retire the next three hitters and escape the inning with no further damage.
Hagemann retired the first 11 Bluejay hitters she faced, striking out the first seven of the game, before the Bluejays (11-14) broke up the Nebraska no-hitter in the top of the fourth inning. Baker worked the count full after falling behind 0-2 and then hit a towering home run off the scoreboard in left field to cut the Husker lead in half. Baker's team-leading ninth home run of the season made the score 2-1 in favor of the home team.
The Huskers got that run back in the bottom of the fourth inning as Tatum Edwards scored from first on a triple by Ashley Guile after she reached base on an error.
Nebraska tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run off the bat of Julie Brechtel.
In the top of the sixth inning, Ruf connected for a line-drive home run that just cleared the six-foot fence in center field for her seventh home run of the year, making the score 5-2 in favor of the Huskers.
Nebraska scored for the third straight inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs to push ahead 7-2.
Hagemann struck out a season-high 13 and did not issue a walk, while allowing two hits to improve to 20-3 on the season.
Changstrom (8-6), a Lincoln native, tossed a complete game, allowing five earned runs and seven hits in her home town. Her streak of 25.1 consecutive scoreless innings came to an end in the first inning.
The Bluejays will look to bounce back tomorrow when they play a doubleheader at Iowa State. First pitch between the Jays and Cyclones is set for 2 pm at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Ames.
