Bluejays not Blue Jays
Creighton's mascot is the Bluejays or Bluejay, one word. Conversely the MLB Toronto team is the Blue Jays.
Scouting Creighton
Creighton returns seven starters among 13 letterwinners from last season's 30-25 squad that posted the programs first back-to-back 30-win seasons since 2009-10 and finished runner-up in the BIG EAST tournament for a second consecutive year. With the continued success, the Bluejays were picked to finish second in the BIG EAST by the league coaches in 2026.
The Bluejays return two All-BIG EAST selections from a year ago, a group led by second team selections Kaelan Schultz and Lily West, as well as two-time defending BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Ashten Pierson.
Fully healthy, Schultz smashed 14 home runs and collecting 39 RBI while hitting .342 in 40 games, while West owned a .339 batting average with 64 hits, including six doubles, two triples, four home runs, 44 RBI and 39 runs scored last season.
Pierson, one of four Bluejays to start all 55 games last spring, will once again anchor the Creighton defense up the middle after posting a .950 fielding percentage with 95 assists and 97 putouts a season ago.
Also back are key contributors Erika Perez (.326 BA, 44 Hits, 11 2B, 32 BB), Ella Dalton (.265 BA, 9 2B, 9 SB, 29 R), Avery Barnard (.291 BA, 23 Hits, 15 Runs), Kenzie Nakasawa (.250 BA, 12 BB, 9 RBI) and Lynn Davis (.225 BA, 18 Hits, 10 Runs) while Creighton picked up Oklahoma State transfer Tara Vandewater in addition to adding eight freshmen.
In the circle, the Bluejays return Brooklyn Patchen to anchor the rotation. Patchen looks to build upon her successful sophomore season, where posted 11 wins and recorded 96 strikeouts and a 4.18 ERA.
She headlines one of CU's deepest positions as the Bluejays will seek a boost in the circle from incoming transfers Gracie Maloney and Landrie Harris, as well as true freshmen Audrey Gilman and Ava Drehs.
Head coach Krista Wood is in her fourth season with the Bluejays and holds a 596-396 career record, including a 88-78 mark at Creighton.
Scouting Central Arkansas
Central Arkansas went 28-27 last season, finishing third in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 16-7 record.
ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Addie Graham and Kaitlyn Graham were both named All-ASUN last year and guide a core nucleus of seven returning starters into the 2026 season.
Addie earned First Team All-ASUN honors last season after posting a .389 batting average with 68 hits, 12 doubles and three home runs, while Kaitlyn hit .308 with 48 hits, 11 doubles, 31 RBI and 26 walks to earn Third Team All-ASUN acclaim. Additionally, Lilly Hood returns to the Bears lineup after collecting 48 hits and 34 RBI while hitting .294 a season ago.
In the circle, the Bears return ace Bailie Runner for her 5th year after recording 11 wins, 81 strikeouts and a 5.19 ERA in 157.2 innings of work last spring. Central Arkansas will also look to Lucy Crowder to be a key contributor after posting a 4-2 record and a 5.61 ERA in 33.2 innings of work in 2025.
Head coach Kayla Lucas is in her second season at the helm of Central Arkansas and holds a 28-27 record as the head coach of the Bears.
Series History Against The Bears
Creighton and Central Arkansas have met three times previously with the Bluejays holding a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.
The two squads first met in 2007 at the UCA Spring Clash in Conway, Ark. with the Jays sweeping the two-game set with 8-1 and 5-0 victories.
Central Arkansas won the most recent meeting, claiming a 13-2 win over the Bluejays back on Feb. 22, 2013, in Arkansas.
Krista Wood is 2-0 against Central Arkansas as a head coach, having won both of those meetings while serving as the head coach at South Dakota State.
Scouting Sam Houston
Sam Houston returns four regular starters and nearly its entire pitching staff from a team that went 28-29 last year and finished tied for fifth in Conference USA with a 14-13 mark.
Junior Abigail Young, a Preseason All-CUSA selection, will look to anchor the Bearkat's pitching staff once again after recording a 1.90 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 110.1 innings last season. She's joined in the circle by Kendal Daniel (3.44 ERA, 49 K's, 95.2 IP) and Amy Abke (3.07 ERA, 72 K's, 68.1 IP), who look to make a bigger impact this spring.
Offensively, the Bearkats are led by Bella Perez and Morgan Holliday. Perez hit .289 with a team-high 13 home runs and 35 RBI, while Holliday recorded 28 hits, including five doubles and six home runs on .215 hitting in 2025.
In addition, Kyla Heine (.242 BA, 24 Hits, 6 SB) and Kinsey Hobbs (.200 BA, 21 Hits, 7 SB) will have a more defined role for the Bearkats this season.
Sam Houston was picked to finish fifth in the Conference USA Preseason Coaches' Poll as head coach Garrett Valis enters his eighth season with the Bearkats.
Series History Against The Bearkats
Creighton leads the all-time series with Sam Houston, 8-5, in a series that dates back to 1983.
The Bluejays and Bearkats first met in the American Legion Tournament in 1983 when Creighton claimed an 11-1 victory.
The Jays have won four of the last five meetings, but dropped the most recent contest, 7-1, at the North Texas Invitation in 2016.
Krista Wood has never faced Sam Houston as a head coach.
Scouting South Dakota
South Dakota finished the 2025 season with an 32-24 overall record and an 8-10 mark in the Summit League. The Coyotes fell one win short of an NCAA Tournament berth after dropping a 4-2 decision to Omaha in the Summit League Tournament Championship game.
USD is back at full strength with six starters and two pitchers returning to the Coyotes lineup, led by All-Summit League selections Delaney White, Ella McGee and Abi Brown.
White led the South Dakota offense in 2025 with a .383 batting average, collecting 70 hits, 22 runs and 37 RBI, while McGee hit .335 with 53 hits, five doubles, five triples and 40 runs scored. Brown, meanwhile, posted a team-best .558 slugging percentage with six home runs and 21 RBI.
In the circle, the Coyotes are forced to replace it top two pitchers, McKenna Young and Clara Edwards, but will look for Madison Edwards (3.94 ERA, 21 K's) and Campbell German (4.16 ERA, 26 K's, 33.2 IP) to take a step forward as anchors to the South Dakota pitching staff this season.
In addition, the Coyotes will seek major contribution in the circle from Kirkwood CC transfer Peyton Paulsen. Paulsen was the 2025 NJCAA Pitcher of the Year and NFCA First Team All-American after recording a 24-3 record and a 1.80 ERA with 144 strikeouts in 163.0 innings of work last season.
Head coach Robert Wagner enters his 10th season at the helm for South Dakota.
Series History Against The Coyotes
Creighton leads the all-time series against South Dakota, 20-8.
The Bluejays have won seven of the last eight meetings, which includes a 5-2 win over the Coyotes in the most recent meeting in 2024.
Creighton and South Dakota are tied 3-3 in neutral site matchups, with the Coyotes claiming wins in all three neutral site meetings in 2017.
Krista Wood owns an 21-13 record as a head coach against South Dakota, including a perfect 3-0 mark at Creighton.

It Gets Earlier Every Year
Friday's Bearkat Classic opener will take place on February 6, tied for the second-earliest start date for a season-opener in Creighton softball history.
The only earlier starts in program history came in 2015 (Feb. 5) when the Jays defeated Pacific, 2-0, at the Kajikawa Classic is Tempe, Ariz.
In comparison, Creighton's season-opener in 1977, its first season as a program, didn't take place until March 28.
Making Opening Statements
Despite holding a 23-26 record in season-openers, Creighton has outscored its opponents 209-201 in 49 season-opening contests.
In the Bluejays' 23 victories, they have averaged an impressive 7.00 runs per game, including five or more runs on 12 different occasions. The Bluejays have also held its opponents to just 1.39 runs per contests in its 23 lid-lifting victories.
Creighton, however, has only averaged 1.85 runs per game and has allowed 6.04 runs per contests during its 26 season-opening losses.

Mix of Old and New
Creighton returns 13 letterwinners and seven starters from last season's squad that went 30-25 and finished as the BIG EAST Tournament runner-up for a second consecutive season. The Bluejays also reloaded, bringing in 11 newcomers to the softball program.
Of this season's 11 new faces, eight are freshmen and three are incoming transfers from, Oklahoma State, North Texas and McLennan CC.
Of note, this is the fourth straight season the Bluejays have had at least nine newcomers join the program.
Making an Entrance
Eight Bluejay freshmen (Emma Bailey, Ava Drehs, Zoey Greenwood, Gracie Maloney, Aubriella Martinez, Keegan Mayhue, Karina Trevino, and Chiqui Vazquez), as well as transfers Audrey Gilman, Landrie Harris, and Tara Vandewater and redshirt freshman Mazie Flud, could all make their Creighton debuts this weekend at the Bearkat Classic in Huntsville, Texas.
Since joining the BIG EAST in 2014, Creighton has only had 14 true freshmen start the season opener. In 2024, Ashten Pierson got the starting nod at shortstop and went on to become the first freshman in league history to earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors, while senior Lily West earned the start behind the dish in 2023.
Below is a look at how Creighton's current players have performed in their Creighton debuts, as well as a list of Bluejay freshmen to earn a season-opening start since 2013.

Her 166 consecutive starts are the longest starting streak by a Bluejay since Madeline Vejvoda started the final 174 games in her Bluejay career from 2020- 2024.
Lily's Keeping it 100
Lily West, one of the most prolific hitters in program history, is looking to rewrite the record book in 2026 as the senior slugger closes in on multiple career milestones.

Coaching is Key
After leading the Bluejays to a 30-25 record in 2025, its first back-to-back 30-win seasons since 2009-10, and a runner-up finish in both the BIG EAST Tournament for a second consecutive season, head coach Krista Wood's expectations are higher than ever as the Creighton Softball program seeks its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010.
In just three seasons as the Creighton head coach, Wood has engineered one of the nation's greatest turnarounds
.She has coached seven first team and four
second team All-BIG EAST picks, while also recruiting and coaching the 2024 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year (Natalia Puchino) and the two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year (Ashten Pierson). In addition, Wood has also coached five NFCA All-Great Lakes Region, 11 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District and 38 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete members during her first three seasons.

It's just the second time in Creighton's 13 years in the BIG EAST Conference that the Bluejays have been picked second, as the 2014 squad was also picked second in the Jays inaugural season in the league. It is the Bluejays highest preseason pool ranking since being the league favorites in 2019.
