OMAHA, Neb. - A bases loaded double from Emily Perry keyed a four-run third inning and helped the Creighton softball team to a 6-3 win over North Dakota in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex. Junior Kylie Hovinga struck out six in 4.2 innings of relief to pick up the win for the Bluejays.
The Fighting Sioux struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning to chase starting pitcher Brittany Telecky from the game. Courtney Gonzales drove in the game's first run, sneaking a single through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded. Telecky was lifted in favor of Hovinga. The left-hander allowed a run-scoring single to the first batter she faced before retiring the next two UND batters to escape the inning without any further damage.
The Bluejays answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, as Liz McKewon slapped a double to left center field to get the rally started. She moved to third base on a bloop single by Danai Martin just over the pitcher's glove. The pair of Bluejay runners then executed a perfect double steal as McKewon took home on the throw to second by UND catcher Amber Roth. Martin stole third base and was there with two outs after walks to Ellen Homan and Christa Ruf loaded the bases. Perry then delivered the key hit of the game, a bases clearing double to the fence in left center to give the Bluejays a 4-2 lead.
UND scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to cut the Bluejay lead to 4-3.
Amy Baker crushed her league-leading 14th home run of the season in the fifth inning to put the Jays ahead 5-3. Her blast makes her the only player in school history to have two seasons with at least 14 home runs.
Creighton added an insurance tally in the sixth ining, as Sammy Snygg scored after ripping a one-out double off the left field fence.
Hovinga struck out six and walked none in moving her record to 3-3 on the season. The left-hander allowed only three hits and one run in her 4.2 innings out of the bullpen. Telecky took a no decision after lasting 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run.
Martin finished the opener 2-for-3 with two stolen bases to move her season total to 13 steals. Perry, who entered the game with four RBI on the season, finished with three RBI in game one. Creighton smacked three doubles and had three stolen bases in the win.
