HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Creighton softball team fell 5-2 to South Dakota in the finale of the Bearkat Classic on Sunday morning in Huntsville, Texas.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 2-3 on the season, while the Coyotes improved to 2-3 with the win.
South Dakota placed the first dent on the scoreboard with a four-run first inning and never trailed in the contest. After three straight walks to open the game loaded the base, Delaney White delivered a grand slam to left to give the Coyotes an early 4-0 advantage.
Creighton responded with a run in the second as Kaelan Schultz drew a six-pitch walk, advanced third on a walk by Erika Perez and an Avery Barnard fielder's choice before steal of home to cut the deficit to 4-1.
South Dakota would tack on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from Abi Brown to push the edge to 5-1.
Down to their final three outs, Creighton used a leadoff walk from Barnard and a single from Ella Dalton to put runners on first and second with one out. Freshman Zoey Greenwood then delivered an RBI single back up the middle, scoring Barnard from second, but it wasn't enough as the Coyotes held on for the 5-2 victory.
Creighton managed to record just five hits in the contest, while Gracie Maloney was tagged with the loss in the circle. Audrey Gilman provided a spark off the bench, striking out three and allowing just one run in 6.2 innings of work.
Madison Evans earned the win in the circle for the Coyotes, striking out six in a complete-game effort.
The Bluejays returns to the field next weekend when they travel to Tempe, Ariz to open play at the Bear Down Fiesta on Feb. 13 against Drake at 10 a.m. Central.
