OMAHA, Neb. - After scoring a goal just 11 minutes into the match, the Creighton women's soccer team allowed two unanswered goals to Northern Colorado and fell 2-1 on Friday night. The Jays fall to 3-4 on the season, dropping three straight matches for the first time since 2000.
The Jays got on the board first, scoring in the opening frame for just the third time this season. After nearly scoring in the 6th minute of play and again in the 10th minute of play, Brittney Neumann scored her second goal of the season off a lead pass from Lauren Cingoranelli. Neumann looped her shot in over the head of UNC's goalkeeper Kirstin Salminen.
Less than two minutes later, the match was again tied, as the Bears scored just a minute and 20 seconds following Neumann's goal. Angela Csaszar scored her first goal of the season when Ariel Cook dished an assist just in front of the goal that Csaszar put in the back of the net from five yards out.
The Jays looked like they would score again in the 23rd minute, when Neumann again found herself with a one-on-one with the UNC goalkeeper, but this time Neumann laced the ball just wide of the goal.
Creighton remained in control offensively for the better part of the opening frame, holding a 7-5 advantage in shots in the frame. The Jays also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Katie Jo Swanson finished the opening frame with four saves, nearly doubling her season total (entered the match with six saves).
The match was controlled by the defenses in the second half until the Bears took their first lead of the match. After forcing back-to-back corner kicks, the Bears knocked a ball around inside the penalty box, eventually burying it in the back of the net in the 75th minute when Danielle Birdsall scored her first goal of the season.
The two teams finished the match without another shot on goal recorded, finishing with a 7-6 edge for Northern Colorado in shots on goal. Neumann led the Jays with five shots, three on goal, while Erin Gunther put two shots on goal in the match.
Creighton will be in action on Sunday, when they take on Boise State. It marks the first meeting between the two teams in women's soccer. First kick is set for 1:00 pm from Morrison Stadium.
Notes: Brittney Neumann scored the 18th goal of her Bluejay career tonight, putting her just five goals away from the top five all-time charts... Both teams scored in the opening frame of the match on Friday night. That is the first time this season both teams have scored in the opener... Northern Colorado now holds a one-match lead over the Jays, holding a 3-2-1 lead in series play.
