LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Creighton women's soccer team was outshot 25-6 on Sunday afternoon in Laramie, but played to a 0-0 scoreless draw with the Cowgirls. Alicia Montgomery finished the day with 13 saves and picked up her 19th career shutout, third on the Creighton all-time charts. The Jays are now 5-4-1 on the season, 1-0-0 in Valley play.
"I thought we played well defensively despite what the shot totals were," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We gave up a lot of shots from distances that weren't dangerous. On the attacking side, we have to find a way to be more dangerous in scoring goals. It took us over a half to really get ahold of the game offensively."
The Jays were outshot 25-6 on the day, including a 21-3 deficit in regulation. Beth Fyles and Erin Gunther each finished with two shots, while Macy Mauer and Fyles were the only two with shots on goal.
Montgomery's 13 saves are tied for second most in Creighton history, with Jamie Thompson and Denise Zaver, and then most single match saves since 2000. Last season, Katie Jo Swanson finished the match with 10 saves against the Wyoming Cowgirls.
A win would have marked the third straight for the Jays, the first time the team has done so since the 10-match win streak was snapped last season. Creighton has also now posted three straight shutouts, doing so for the first time since Oct. 9 - Oct. 16, 2010.
Creighton will return to play next Saturday when they travel to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces. The Purple Aces hold a 14-12-1 overall lead over the Jays, but the Jays have won the last four meetings, including two MVC Tournament match-ups.
