OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball team picked up its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season in convincing fashion Thursday night at D.J. Sokol Arena, cruising to an 65-33 win over Evansville. Carli Tritz led the balanced scoring attack with 15 points, while Jordan Garrison added a career-high 11 points off the bench. The Bluejays held Evansville to the fewest points by a CU opponent since 1978 in the 32-point victory.
The Purple Aces (4-12, 1-4 MVC) jumped out to an early three-point lead and were up 8-7 nearly seven minutes into the game before the Bluejay defense asserted itself and the shots started falling for the home team.
With a 15-12 lead, the Bluejays put together an 11-2 run to take control of the game. Creighton led by as many as 14 in the first half and owned a 29-17 halftime lead.
The Bluejays (7-8, 1-3 MVC) owned better than a 20-point lead for the final 15 minutes of the game, as all 11 players played at least nine minutes and none played more than 25 minutes. Nine of the 11 who played, scored in the win. The Bluejays shot 45.6 percent in the game, including 51.9 percent after halftime. Creighton who had been out-rebounded by an average of 11.7 boards in its first three MVC games, out-worked Evansville 39-23 on the glass.
Tritz led the way with 15 points, making 5-of-10 shots and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Garrison made 3-of-4 three-points and 4-of-5 shots for her career-best 11 points. Alyssa Kamphaus pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, including six offensive, and added eight points in 17 minutes off the bench. Sarah Nelson also chipped in 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals before sitting most of the second half.
Samantha Heck led UE with 15 points, while Briyana Blair paced her team with seven rebounds. The Aces shot just 32.6 percent from the floor and 18.2 percent from three-point range.
The 33 points by the Aces were the fewest scored by a Bluejay opponent since the Jays held Nebraska Wesleyan to 31 on Nov. 28, 1978.
Creighton looks to pick up another MVC win when it hosts Southern Illinois on Saturday. The Salukis (3-12, 0-5 MVC) have dropped 23 straight conference games. CU and SIU tip at 2:05 pm on Saturday.
