NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State captured its 20th consecutive Missouri Valley Conference home win with a 79-66 defeat of the Creighton women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at Redbird Arena. The win snapped Creighton's three-game winning streak and dropped the Bluejays to 9-9 on the year. Carli Tritz led the Bluejays with 18 points, making her final eight field goal attempts in the loss.
The Bluejays are now 3-4 in MVC play, while the Redbirds up their record to 10-8 on the year and 5-2 in conference action.
Creighton held a one point lead nearly eight minutes in and trailed by just one with six minutes to play in the first half, but the Redbirds pulled away just before halftime. ISU scored the final eight points of the half and closed the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 39-28 lead into the break.
After shooting 56.7 percent from the field in the first half, the Redbirds started the second half by making their first six field goal attempts to blow the game open. ISU used a 13-1 run early in the second half to push ahead by 21 less than four minutes into the half.
The Jays didn't back down, getting the Redbird lead back to 11, while missing a few chances to get within single digits. The hot-shooting home team kept its distance from the Bluejays to post their 20th straight Valley home win since the Bluejays beat them in Normal on Jan. 2, 2010.
Illinois State shot 54.1 percent in the game, making 33-of-61 shots. ISU made 38.5 percent of its threes (5-13) and shot 72.7 percent at the free-throw line (8-11).
The Redbirds out-rebounded the Jays 35-32, while CU shot 43.5 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from three-point range (6-17) and 60 percent (6-10) at the line.
Katie Broadway led the Redbirds with a career-high 29 points, making 12-of-17 field goals in 39 minutes of action. Marley Hall chipped in 15 points for ISU and newcomer Jamie Russell added 10 points and led her team with five assists and five steals.
After starting the game 1-of-7 from the field, Tritz scored 16 of her team-best 18 points in the second half. She went 8-for-8 from the field over the final 8:30 of the game.
Sarah Nelson grabbed her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Johnson added 10 points off the bench for the Bluejays. McKenzie Fujan led all players with a career-high six assists, doubling her previous best assist total.
Creighton now returns home to host its next four MVC games, starting with a Friday night contest against reigning MVC champion Northern Iowa (12-6, 5-2 MVC). CU and UNI's game on Friday at D.J. Sokol Arena has been designated as a "whiteout" and it will also be televised on Fox Sports Midwest.
