
Shockers Knock Off Bluejays in Women's Basketball, 65-58

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State improved to 4-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference for the first time in school history, defeating the Creighton women's basketball team 65-58 at Charles Koch Arena Sunday afternoon. The Bluejays, off to just their second 0-3 MVC start in school history were led by Sarah Nelson's 14 points.
Ally Jensen made the first basket of the game to put the Bluejays up 3-0 and the Jays led by three with three minutes off the clock. After a traditional three-point play by freshman Taylor Johnson, Creighton was up 13-10 with 13:47 left in the first half before the Shockers answered with six straight points.
The score was tied at 18 before the Shockers rattled off a 13-2 run to go ahead 31-20 with just over two minutes left in the half. The Bluejays closed the half on an 8-2 run, including a Carli Tritz buzzer-beating runner to make the halftime score 33-28 in favor of the home team.
Nelson scored the first two points of the second half with a pair of free throws to cut the WSU lead to 33-30, but the Bluejays could never get closer than four points the rest of the way after Haleigh Lankster answered with a basket.
The Jays struggled at the foul line, where they left points at the stripe all day in the close game. The Bluejays missed the first three front end opportunities on one-and-one shots in the game and were only 2-of-6 at the free-throw line in the opening half. Outside of Nelson's 8-for-9 performance at the line, the rest of the team combined to make 4-of-11 shots at the stripe.
Creighton (6-8) grabbed just 28 rebounds for the third straight game, its fourth straight loss. The Jays were outrebounded 39-28 in the loss. CU shot 39.2 percent from the field and made 6-of-17 (.353) three-pointers, but finished the game 12-of-20 (.600) at the line.
Nelson was just 3-for-10 from the field, but made a career-best 8-of-9 free-throws for the Jays. Tritz finished with 11 points and led the team with four assists and two steals. Jensen finished with nine points, making 3-of-6 threes before fouling out with less than a minute to play.
Lankster led WSU with 20 points, making 8-of-8 shots at the line. Jessica Diamond had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Shockers. WSU made 19-of-22 (.864) free-throws in the win. The Shockers moved to 10-5 on the year with their seventh straight win.
Creighton is off to only its second 0-3 MVC start in school history, equalling the 2006-07 team's start. The Jays will look for their first Valley win when they return home on Thursday to play host to Evansville at D.J. Sokol Arena.
