Men's Tennis Closes Out Spring Break With 6-1 Win Over Niagara

ORLANDO, Fla. - Billy Paluch led the way on the week, going undefeated at No. 1 singles and doubles, as the Creighton men's tennis team closed out play on their trip to Orlando with a 6-1 win over Niagara. The Bluejays finished the week 3-1, improving to 6-3 overall on the season.
"Overall we had a good week in Orlando," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We would have liked to win the St. Joseph match, but we talked after the match and straightened some things out. I thought the guys responded today, beating this Niagara team that is just as good as the St. Joseph team."
"I am very happy with Billy [Paluch's] play on the week, as he led our team going undefeated in singles and doubles play at the No. 1 position, playing very good tennis."
Creighton again won the doubles point, sweeping play again. Sean Mathison and Ryan Norman defeated David Lemieux-Serrasin and Mathieu Lacasse 8-2 at the No. 3 doubles. Mathison and Norman are now 7-1 on the spring.
Paluch teamed up with J.T. Christian to defeat Brandon Gallegos and David Raymond 8-5 at the No. 1 doubles. The duo won all four of their doubles matches of spring break, improving to 7-2 overall, which leads the team.
Closing out doubles play, Kyle Obermeier and Elliott Baker defeated Lorenz Schwoier and Oliver Dufour Coursol 9-7 at the No. 2 doubles. The Bluejays have now won the doubles point in seven matches this season, sweeping doubles play six times.
The Purple Eagles evened up the score at 1-1, wnning the No. 4 singles, before the Jays won the other five matches. Pliver Dufour Coursol defeated Ryan Norman 6-4, 6-3 to even it at 1-1.
Paluch then defeated David Raymond 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles (winning his fifth straight singles match and improving to 7-2 on the spring season), followed by Christian downing Brandon Gallegos 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Creighton secured the win when Gabe Nagy defeated Lemieux-Serrasin 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles.
Obermeier won in a gutsy performance at the No. 2 singles. After spraining his ankle midway through the match and taking a medical timeout, he came back to win two out of the next three sets to win the match 6-4, 6-4 over Lorenz Schwoier. Obermeier has won nine of his last 10 singles matches. Mathison closed out singles play with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mathieu Lacasse at the No. 6 singles.
The Jays will be in action again when they host Northern Colorado on Sunday, March 18.
