Men's Soccer Claims Exhibition Finale, 1-0, vs. UNO
8/19/2012 6:48:00 PM | Men's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. -- Eric Miller scored in the game's 74th minute as Creighton defended its home turf with a 1-0 men's soccer victory over crosstown rival Nebraska Omaha on Sunday, Aug. 19 at Morrison Stadium.
Miller's score came off a corner kick. Jose Ribas delivered a beautiful ballo the middle of the box, where Miller's left-footed volley found the back of the net.
Jeff Gal came up big in the 23rd minute to stop UNO star Logan Mendez from close range. Five minutes later Creighton had two good chances, including a Andrew Ribeiro laser that deflected off the left post before being cleared.
Creighton out-shot UNO 6-1 in the first half, but the Mavericks' Mendez had the only attempt on net.
Less than four minutes after Miller's go-ahead goal, the Jays nearly doubled their lead. After Sean Kim was tackled in the box, the Jays were awarded a penalty kick. The attempt by Ribas deflected off the crossbar, however, keeping the CU lead steady at 1-0.
Creighton unleashed a shot barrage in the second half against Maverick keeper Matt Grosey, and took 18 straight shots vs. UNO after Mendez' early attempt. CU ended with a 19-3 lead in shots on the afternoon.
Creighton opens regular-season play on Friday, Aug. 24 with a 7:30 pm match at Morrison Stadium vs. Northern Illinois. UNO hosts Bellevue next Sunday night in its regular-season lid-lifter.
NOTES: Creighton and UNO have not met in a regular-season game since 1982 ... Nebraska Omaha is coached by former Bluejay assistant coach Jason Mims. Mims is assisted by former Bluejay student-athletes Tim Walters and Brian Holt.
