OMAHA, Neb. - Senior Gabriela Guillén has called up to play for Costa Rican National Team in a friendly match against the U.S. National Team on Sept. 1 in Rochester, N.Y.
This marks the third time that Guillén has played for her home country, playing for the U20 and U17 squads previously, but it is her first opportunity to play for the Costa Rican National Team.
Guillén will miss the Jays' Aug. 31 game at Kansas, but expects to be back in time to play in Creighton's home match with Arizona on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
"It's an honor and a really exciting experience, this is the first time I will play for the full national team," said Guillén.
The match on Sept. 1 is the first for the U.S. National Team since it won the Gold Medal against Japan in the 2012 Olympics in England. The match has already been designated as a sell out, but it is schedule to be shown live on NBC at 2 p.m.
"We are excited for Gaby to be able to have this opportunity to play for her country (Costa Rica) against the Gold Medal winning USA," said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. "It is sure to be a special environment with the game being sold out and an experience she will remember forever. We look forward to having her back with us for the Arizona game."
