Scouting Creighton
Creighton (5-1) is off to its best start since 2006, with wins over UCF (3-1), USF (3-0), Wisconsin (3-1), Syracuse (3-0) and Denver (3-1) in addition to a three-set loss to No. 21 Kansas State.
Two-time First-Team All-MVC pick Megan Bober (9.29 aps., 2.86 dps., 1.90 kps., .352%) was named Tournament MVP at the USF Invitational. She was the lone Bluejay to earn Preseason All-MVC accolades this fall, and has started all 101 matches in a Creighton uniform.
Fellow senior Heather Thorson (1.95 kps., 1.05 bps., .210%) is third on the team in blocks and fourth in kills. She teams with fellow MB Kelli Browning (2.71 kps., 1.29 bps.), who is leading the team in kills and blocks and earned All-Tournament recognition last weekend.
Creighton's freshman class is also making an impact, as Kate Elman (4.76 dps.), Ashley Jansen (2.81 dps.), Melanie Jereb (2.05 kps., 2.38 dps.) and Lizzy Stivers (0.19 saps.) own 23 of the team's 30 aces thus far.
As a team, Creighton averages 13.10 kills, 1.43 aces, 16.5 digs and 2.64 blocks per set while hitting .248.
Creighton returns nine letterwinners and five starters from last year's team that finished 17-14 overall and fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 12-6 league record. The Bluejays were picked fourth (of 10 teams) in the MVC this fall.
Scouting Ball State
Ball State has started 4-3, alternating wins and losses in its first seven matches. If that trend continues, the Cardinals will lose to Creighton on Friday.
Preseason All-MAC selection Kara Bates leads BSU with 3.50 kills per set thus far. She's also averaging 2.17 digs and 0.42 blocks per frame.
Also averaging multiple kills are Kylee Baker (2.58 kps., 3.12 dps.), Lauren Grant (2.33 kps.), Lisa Scott (2.08 kps., .274%) and Mindy Marx (2.00 kps.).
Setter Jacqui Seidel (10.75 aps., 3.04 dps.) directs the offense, while libero Catie Fredrich (5.00 dps.) runs the defense.
Ball State averages 13.92 kills, 1.17 aces, 17.42 digs and 1.46 blocks per set while hitting .217 as a squad.
The Cardinals were voted second in the West Division of the preseason MAC poll after returning three starters (and its libero) from a team that went 25-8 a year ago.
Scouting Tulsa
The preseason favorite in Conference USA, Tulsa has started 5-3 this season, including impressive wins over Western Michigan and Missouri State.
Two-time All-American and C-USA Player of the Year Tyler Henderson led the nation with 6.23 kills per set (on .348% hitting) as a sophomore, then averaged 4.86 kills per set on .353 hitting a year ago to rank fifth. This year Henderson averages 5.66 kills per set on .351 hitting.
Kellie Culbertson (3.03 kps., 3.41 dps.) and Diana Silva (2.62 kps., 3.69 dps.) also have standout numbers, proving the Hurricane are more than a one-woman show.
Senior Jordan Clampitt (9.21 aps.) and her sophomore sister Bailey Clampitt (4.55 aps.) handle the setting duties, while Jessica Adams (4.93 dps.) is the team's libero.
Tulsa averages 15.24 kills, 1.34 aces, 16.90 digs and 1.45 blocks per set while hitting .227.
Tulsa went 28-7 last year, winning Conference USA with an 18-2 league mark. The Golden Hurricane return nine letterwinners and five starters (plus its libero) from that squad.
Scouting Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado is off to a 6-0 start, including wins over Big 12 foes from TCU and Oklahoma
The Bears beat TCU, Belmont and Alabama A&M to win the Belmont Invitational to start the season, then won the Hampton Inn & Suites Northern Colorado Classic last weekend with home triumphs over Oklahoma, Air Force and North Dakota State to match its best start in the program's Division I history.
Sophomore OH Tambre Haddock (3.23 kps., 3.41 dps.) leads the team in kills and is second in digs.
Reigning Big Sky Conference Player of the Year Kelley Arnold (2.89 kps., 3.11 dps.) earned MVP honors last weekend. Arnold averaged 3.88 kills per set on .291 hitting a year ago.
Senior setter Marissa Hughes (10.10 aps.) was named MVP of the Belmont Invitational and directs the offense.
UNC averages 13.00 kills, 1.45 aces, 2.14 blocks and 16.82 digs per set while hitting .243 as a team.
The Bears went 22-9 last year and return five starters and eight letterwinners, making them heavy favorites to repeat their 2011 regular-season and conference tournament titles in the Big Sky.
The Coaches
Creighton is coached by Kirsten Bernthal Booth (Truman State, 1997), who owns a 163-116 record in her 10th season with the Bluejays. She became the program's all-time winningest coach on Aug. 25, 2007 with a 3-0 win over Stephen F. Austin and joined the 100-win club with an Oct. 31, 2008 win at Drake. She was named the 2010 CVU.com National Coach of the Year after leading Creighton to the second round during its first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Booth came to Creighton after going 112-41 in three years at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A native of Lincoln, Neb., Booth played volleyball at Truman State, where she was named conference MVP, an Academic All-American and Missouri's 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year. She ranked third in Division II history with 6,077 assists when she graduated.
Booth is helped by assistant coaches Tom Mendoza and Angie Oxley Behrens and volunteer assistant Amanda (Gates) Sjuts.
Ball State is coached by Steve Shondell (Ball State, 1977), who is 53-16 in his third season with the Cardinals. A two-time National High School Coach of the Year and a 2007 AVCA Hall of Fame inductee, Shondell returned to his alma mater after going 1,183-95 in 34 years at Burris Laboratory School with 21 state titles, four national titles and 11 top-three national finishes. He is assisted by Corey Carlin, Kelli Miller and Brad Kline.
Tulsa is coached by Steven McRoberts (Harding, 1993), who is 33-10 in his second year with the Golden Hurricane and 430-150 in 16 years including stints at Central Arkansas and Lubbock Christian. He is assisted by Kyle Gamble, Ronaldo Pacheco and Mark Mann.
Northern Colorado is coached by Lyndsey Oates (LSU, 2002), who is 127-90 in her eighth year. Before being promoted three days before the start of fall practice in 2005, Oates was previously an assistant at Northern Colorado and at Samford before that. She is assisted by Jenny Glenn, Tom Hunter and John Forster.
Series History vs. Ball State
Creighton has never faced Ball State.
Series History vs. Tulsa
Creighton is 4-0 all-time against Tulsa, with all of those meetings taking place when the Golden Hurricane were a member of the MVC. In fact, CU's Oct. 1, 1994 win over Tulsa remains the first Jays volleyball win in MVC play.
The programs have not met since 1995.
Series History vs. Northern Colorado
Creighton is 1-1 all-time vs. Northern Colorado, though this will be the first encounter in Greeley.
UNC won in four sets at New Mexico in 2004 before Creighton swept the Bears at the Bluejay Invitational in 2005 in Lyndsey Oates' first match as a head coach.
Kirsten Bernthal Booth is 1-1 vs. Northern Colorado, while Oates is 0-1 vs. Creighton.
Last Weekend Summary
Creighton went 2-1 at the Bluejay Invitational last weekend, beating Syracuse (3-0) and Denver (3-1) and losing to No. 21 Kansas State (3-0).
Sophomore MB Kelli Browning averaged 2.90 kills and 1.30 blocks per set while also hitting .471. She was CU's lone All-Tournament Team pick.
Talented Team
Only two freshmen in the Missouri Valley Conference are averaging at least 2.00 kills and 2.00 digs per set thus far, Creighton's Melanie Jereb (2.05 kps., 2.38 dps.) and Illinois State's Ashley Rosch (2.31 kps., 2.88 dps.).
A year at this time, Jereb and Rosch were prep teammates at Cary-Grove (Ill.) High School, part of a team that was state runner-up and also won the 2010 and 2011 AAU Junior National Championships at the club level.
Strong Start
Creighton is off to a 5-1 start, including two wins over the Big East and one victory each over the Big Ten, WAC and Conference USA.
This weekend at the Northern Colorado Classic, CU faces three NCAA Tournament teams from 2011, including the preseason favorite from Conference USA (Tulsa), Ball State and unbeaten Northern Colorado.
Creighton's last 5-1 start came in 2006, which was also the last time the Jays entered MVC play with a winning record.
Elman to 100 Digs Already
Freshman libero Kate Elman continued her strong play in the back row, collecting 44 digs in three Bluejay Invitational matches. Elman now owns 100 career digs after six matches, second-most in Bluejay history. Bianca Rivera had 106 digs through six contests during the 2007 campaign. Elman is the only freshman in the MVC with 10 or more digs in every match this season to date.
One of Seven
Kate Elman is one of six women in the MVC to have 10 or more digs in every match this season, and the only freshman in that grouping.
Others with 10 or more digs each contest this year include Sarah Madden (Drake), Jenny Menendez (Illinois State), Ashley Mason (Missouri State), Bailey Yeager (Southern Illinois) and Jackie Church (Wichita State).
Marian Pipeline
This will be the 10th straight season that Creighton Volleyball will have at least one product of Omaha Marian High School on the roster, as freshmen Kate Elman and Ashley Jansen join the program.
It's also worth noting that Northern Colorado also has a Marian product on the roster, as sophomore MB Andrea Spaustat (2.09 kps., 0.86 bps., .359%) was a former Crusader teammate of Elman and Jansen.
Interestingly, the Jays had never had a volleyball player from Marian between 1994-2002. Here's a look at Creighton's pipeline of players from Marian.
2012: Kate Elman, Ashley Jansen
2011: Julianne Mandolfo
2010: Lisa Greisch, Julianne Mandolfo
2009: Lisa Greisch
2008: Emily Crowley, Korie Lebeda
2007: Korie Lebeda, Katie Mehal
2006: Korie Lebeda, Katie Mehal, Emily Greisch
2005: Korie Lebeda, Katie Mehal
2004: Katie Mehal, Emily Greisch
2003: Emily Greisch
Freshmen Serve It Up
Four of Creighton's six servers are freshmen, so it should come as little surprise that the Jays own 23 of their 30 aces so far from their highly-regarded freshman class. Melanie Jereb, Ashley Jansen, Kate Elman and Lizzy Stivers Elman leads CU with eight aces, just ahead of Jereb's seven. Jansen, Stivers and senior Megan Bober are tied for third on the team in aces with four each.
Title Town Once Again
Creighton made its first trip to the state of Florida a memorable one, winning the USF Invitational with victories over UCF (3-1), USF (3-0) and Wisconsin (3-1) on Aug. 24-25.
The title is the program's first since winning the Blue Raider Bash in 2006, and school's eighth tournament title all-time.
With a title this weekend, Creighton can win two tournaments in the same season for the first time since 2006.
Honors Roll In
Creighton had three players honored for their play in the USF Invitational to open the season.
Kate Elman was named MVC Freshman of the Week after leading all MVC freshmen by averaging 5.09 digs. Elman also served up three aces and had 14 assists.
Sophomore Michelle Sicner averaged 1.91 kills and 1.45 blocks per set while hitting a healthy .386 in the three victories. She had 10 kills on .643 hitting in the Saturday win vs. USF.
Michelle Bober was named USF Invitational MVP after averaging 8.73 assists, 3.09 digs, 2.18 kills and 0.64 blocks per set while hitting .408. Bober was also named MVC Player of the Week, MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week and CVU.com National Player of the Week.
Bober Passes Century Mark
Megan Bober has started all 101 matches since the beginning of the 2009 season, helping CU to 57 wins in that span.
Bober is the sixth player in Bluejay history to make 100 or more starts, a group that includes Allie Oelke (120), Korie Lebeda (119), Jessica Houts (119), Melissa Walsh (107) and Kelly Goc (103).
Bober is also the sixth player in CU history to play in 100 straight matches to start her career, joining Oelke, Lebeda, Walsh, Leah Ratzlaff and Melissa Weisensee.
Bober Starts 3,000-300-300 Club
Megan Bober owns 3,352 assists, 634 kills and 316 blocks in her fine career, making her the Creighton first player with at least 3,000 assists, 300 kills and 300 blocks.
The only other player even close to Bober's totals is Korie Lebeda, who finished her career with 5,281 assists, 411 kills and 278 blocks.
Net Gain
Creighton leads all MVC teams after two weekends in blocking, averaging 2.64 stuffs per set. The Jays have three players averaging more than 1.00 blocks per frame (Heather Thorson, Michelle Sicner and Kelli Browning), the MVC's only school that can claim that.
Creighton has outblocked foes 55.5 - 31.0 thus far, and their 2.64 blocks per set at least 0.90 blocks per set better than all three of this weekend's Northern Colorado Classic opponents.
We've Got Votes
Creighton received a pair of top-25 votes in the Aug. 27 AVCA poll. This was the first time in program history the team has received such recognition in the regular-season, as its only previous votes had come following the 2010 NCAA Tournament, when it received three points in the poll.
Creighton also had one voter select the Jays 25th in this week's poll, but AVCA policy requires multiple votes in order to be listed in the “others receiving votes” category of its weekly poll.
Television Turns Out
Creighton will have three upcoming matches televised by Cox 2 in the coming weeks.
Creighton's Sept. 19 match at Kansas will air, as will home contests vs. both South Dakota (Sept. 25) and Illinois State (Nov. 10).
Creighton has appeared on television 10 times previously since 2003, including Cox's telecast of a 3-2 win home win vs. Wichita State on Nov. 4, 2011.
Regular-Season Tournament History
Creighton is 65-70 in the 45 regular-season tournaments it has participated in all-time, including a 6-6 mark last year and a 5-1 mark this season. Kirsten Bernthal Booth's teams are 45-37 in 29 regular-season tournaments, including six titles.
Before winning the USF Invitational crown in August, the last tournament title came Sept. 9-10, 2006, when CU won the Blue Raider Bash hosted by Middle Tennessee with wins over Saint Louis, Miami (Ohio) and Middle Tennessee.
Creighton had won just two of 16 regular-season tournaments prior to Booth's arrival.
Preseason MVC Poll
Creighton was picked fourth in a preseason poll of Missouri Valley Conference coaches. Defending regular-season champion Northern Iowa was the unanimous pick to win the league, with Missouri State second and Wichita State third. Creighton is fourth and Illinois State fifth. Rounding out the rest of the league was Southern Illinois, Bradley, Indiana State, Evansville and Drake.
In addition, Megan Bober was named preseason all-MVC. She joins Wichita State's Emily Adney as the lone players to repeat on last year's preseason All-Valley list.
Creighton has finished in the spot predicted of them or better in the preseason poll in eight of the past nine years.

New Opportunity at Libero
Kate Elman has been the lone libero used by Creighton so far. She's the first freshman in school history to make her debut wearing the libero jersey.
Since the libero became legal in 2002, the Jays have used multiple liberos in a season just three times (2005, 2006, 2010), and only used 11 different players in that role (Janeen Piller, Molly Lahr, Emily Greisch, Brittany Coleman, Mallory Lahm, Katie Mehal, Sarah Schulze, Bianca Rivera, Nayka Benitez, Julianne Mandolfo, Kate Elman).
The Votes Add Up
Creighton has six matches scheduled against teams that received votes in the preseason AVCA Top 25 poll.
Creighton will play No. 21 Northern Iowa in both Omaha and Cedar Falls, and also has a home-and-home series with vote-getter Wichita State. Creighton also hosts No. 21 Kansas State on Sept. 1st, and plays vote-getter Tulsa on Sept. 8 in Greeley, Colo.
Taking The Fifth
Creighton is 29-16 in five-set matches under Kirsten Bernthal Booth, including a 5-2 mark last year. That's impressive since Creighton had never finished a season with a winning record in fifth sets prior to Booth's arrival.
Below is a list of Creighton's record in five-set matches on a yearly basis:

In its last 145 matches in which it wins set one, Creighton is 132-13. CU is 139-17 overall under Kirsten Bernthal Booth when they win set one. In that same time span, CU is just 24-99 under Booth when it drops the first set.
What's New?
Several rules have been modified for the 2012 season. Most noticeable is the following:
Referee Stand. Rule 1.5.4. The referee stand and platform must be distributed evenly behind the net pole. The ladder must be distributed evenly behind the back of the referee platform. Rationale: Some net systems currently have the referee stand and platform inside the net pole with the ladder on one side of the platform. This could create a potentially dangerous situation and uneven playing area for the team on the side of the ladder.
Use of Electronic Aids. Rule 6.1.5. Statistical data may be transmitted to the bench area from any location in the facility. Electronic audio communication or video transmission is prohibited. Electronic devices may be used in the bench areas during the match for statistical purposes. Rationale: Technology is changing quickly, and allowing statistical information to be transmitted is a current accepted practice.
Change of Team Areas Between Sets. Rule 9.2.4.4.1. The second referee conducts a new coin toss. The home team calls the coin toss for the deciding set. Rationale: The previous rule stated that the first referee had to instruct the second referee to conduct the coin toss. This rule change will align with the current practice.
Substitutions. Rule 11.3.2. Each team is entitled to 15 substitutions per set. Each player is allowed unlimited entries within the team limit. Rationale: The survey results showed a vast majority of coaches in favor of increasing the number of substitutions per set. Many programs are being asked to carry more student-athletes on their team roster. This change allows for increased playing opportunities. Associated Technique. Rule 18.3.6.11. The second referee notifies the appropriate coach(es) when the 12th through 15th team substitutions are made, and the first referee when the 15th substitution is made.
Hand Signals. Rule 18.1.5. If the fault is whistled by the first referee, he or she indicates the result of the play (point or replay) followed by the nature of the fault. The second referee mimics the first referee's signals. [Exception: The second referee does not mimic the signal for net serve].
