
Volleyball Sweeps UNC To Take Northern Colorado Classic Title

GREELEY, Colo. -- Creighton won its second tournament in three weeks. sweeping host Northern Colorado to win the Northern Colorado Classic on Saturday night in Greeley, Colo. Scores of the match in favor of CU were 25-22, 25-21, 25-15.
Creighton is now off to an 8-1 start, while Northern Colorado dropped to 7-2.
Heather Thorson, Megan Bober and Kelli Browning were named to the All-Tournament Team, which was led by MVP Tyler Henderson from Tulsa.
Creighton drew first blood by winning the first set, scoring the final three points in a 25-22 victory. Creighton led most of the way except for a 8-1 run that let UNC take a 15-12 lead. Creighton answered with the next three points to take the lead, and the Jays eventually extended that margin to 22-19. UNC scored three in a row to even the score, but following a Bluejay timeout CU would score the next three points, winning the set on a kill from Melanie Jereb.
The Jays went up 2-0 in the match after rallying from an 15-11 deficit. The Jays used a 5-1 run to knot the score, then pulled away late by scoring four of the last five points. Creighton closed out its 25-21 win with a kill from Thorson.
Creighton pounced on the wounded Bears early in the third set, taking a quick 10-3 lead, and never looked back. A Lizzy Stivers ace gave CU its second title in three weeks with a 25-15 set win.
Leah McNary led Creighton with 14 kills on .481 hitting, with Kelli Browning owning 13 kills on .571 hitting. Kate Elman led the defense with 15 digs, while the Jays served up six aces on the night. Creighton had 39 kills, 44 digs and seven blocks while hitting .278.
UNC was led by 13 kills each from Tambre Haddock and Kelley Arnold, while Omaha Marian product Andrea Spaustat had five kills and three digs. The Bears had 40 kills, four aces, 54 digs and one block on .148 efficiency.
Creighton returns to the floor next Friday when it opens MVC play with a 6 pm home match vs. Missouri State.
