Women's Soccer Falls to Marquette, 7-2

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The opening match of BIG EAST play was less than kind to the Creighton women's soccer team as the Bluejays fell to the two-time defending champion, Marquette, 7-2 on Thursday, Sept. 25.
The loss dropped Creighton to 8-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play, wheil Marquette moved to 5-5-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the 5th and 14th minute.

Junior Kirstyn Corder injected some life into her squad as she headed in a goal on a corner play from junior Jill Richgels at the 25:43 mark.
Marquette, however, answered with its third goal of the game under one minute later to make it 3-1. The Golden Eagles knocked in one more before the end of the opening period, taking a 4-1 lead into the locker room.
Down 5-1 when the Golden Eagles scored at 39:59, Creighton got a huge lift from sophomore Lauren Sullivan's individual effort. Sullivan stole a Marquette pass just over 25 yards from the goal. She raced past three defenders to the right edge of the goal box, then fired a shot back to her left for her sixth goal of the season.
Once more Marquette ended the Bluejays momentum very quickly, scoring its fifth goal 22 seconds later. Marquette's final goal came in the 65th minute of play.
Marquette took 19 shots, while the Bluejays fired 10.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 28 as the Bluejays host St. John's at 1:00 p.m. in Morrison Stadium.
