MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Matt Carlino's three-pointer with 11.2 seconds left gave Marquette a 53-52 victory over visiting Creighton on Wednesday night in Milwaukee.
Marquette improved to 10-6 (2-2 BIG EAST), while Creighton dropped to 9-9 (0-5 BIG EAST). It was the second straight heartbreaking loss for Creighton on a three-pointer in the closing seconds after Sterling Gibbs made a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in Seton Hall's 68-67 win on Saturday.
Creighton led 9-4 in the opening minutes before Marquette heated up from three-point range. Six three-pointers contributed to MU's 22-2 run that put the Golden Eagles up 26-12 and prompt a pair of Bluejay timeouts.
Creighton would answer with a 9-2 run in the final three minutes of the first half to draw within 28-21 at the break. CU shot just 8-for-30 in the first half, including 4-of-16 from three-point land, while MU was 6-of-15 amongst its 11-for-28 shooting at the break.
Creighton got within 32-28 early in the second half, but Duane Wilson drained a pair of three-pointers to push MU's lead back to eight at 41-33 with 11:47 to play. CU responded by taking the lead on a Devin Brooks tip-in with 7:32 left and had a chance to extend that margin, only to turn it over on four consecutive trips.
Isaiah Zierden gave Creighton a 47-44 lead with 3:03 to play, sinking a three-pointer from the corner, only to see MU answer with two free throws by Carlino with 2:36 to play. Creighton then pushed the lead to four on a Rick Kreklow three-pointer with 1:59 left. MU answered on Wilson's driving lay-up, but CU returned the lead to four on a Will Artino spin move.
MU again got within two with 50.8 left on a Carlino jumper. CU would turn the ball over and MU reclaimed the ball with 21.6 left. Carlino would then drain his game-winning three-pointer. The Jays had two attempts in the final seconds, but Artino's five-footer rolled off the rim and a Kreklow tip-in also missed.
Kreklow had 13 points off the bench, while Toby Hegner added 10 points in the return to his home state. The Jays shot 36.4 percent from the field (20-55), including 7-of-26 from three-point land, and out-rebounded MU 34-30 on the night.
MU was paced by 19 points from Carlino, while Wilson added 17. The Golden Eagles shot 41.9 percent on the night and hit 9-of-20 three-pointers. MU scoring leader Luke Fischer scored in the game's first 15 seconds, but would not score again while being held to a season-low two points.
