OMAHA, Neb. -- Noah Franke scored the game-winning goal with three minutes left in a 2-1 victory over St. John's as No. 1 Creighton remained perfect with victory before 3,888 fans at Morrison Stadium on Saturday night.
Creighton is now 12-0-0 (3-0-0 BIG EAST), while St. John's dropped to 3-7-2 (1-1-1 BIG EAST) this fall. Creighton is the nation's first Division I men's team to start 12-0-0 since Cornell and Marquette both did in the fall of 2012.
Fabian Herbers put Creighton on the board in the game's ninth minute. Timo Pitter chased down a pass on the right endline and centered it to Herbers, who one-timed a shot through the Red Storm defense to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
It was the league-leading 10th goal of the season for Herbers, which ranks fourth nationally. Pitter's assist was the 19th of his career, and his 15 career helpers at Morrison Stadium moves him into a tie for second in facility history.
St. John's tied the game in the 78th minute on a bicycle kick by Filippo Ricupati after a header from Marti Tapia centered the ball. It was the first time in three BIG EAST meetings that the Red Storm had scored against the Bluejay defense.
Franke scored his first career goal with 3:02 to play. After a throw-in down the left side, Ricky Lopez-Espin would get behind the defense. His shot bounced hard off the left post, but deflected to Franke near the spot. He collected the ball and put it in with his left foot for the game-winner.
Creighton outshot the Red Storm 14-11 in the match, but the 11 shots by the visitors were a season-high against the Bluejay defense. Connor Sparrow made one save on the night to earn his 30th win as a Bluejay, which ranks seventh in program history.
St. John's goalkeeper Jordan Stagmiller had six saves on the evening before leaving due to injury with 57 seconds to play.
Creighton will play of road matches next week, starting with Wednesday's 6 pm match at No. 21 Butler.
