Winters & Wilkinson pace the offense with 11 kills each
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Creighton Volleyball team clinched a spot in next month's four-team BIG EAST Championships with a 3-0 sweep at Seton Hall on Saturday night in South Orange, N.J. Scores of the win were 25-22, 25-18, 25-20.
The victory improved Creighton to 18-8 this season and keeps the Bluejays alone in first place in the BIG EAST standings with a 12-1 record. It was the 95th victory in the last four seasons for CU, making this year's seniors the winningest class in the program's modern history. Seton Hall dropped to 11-14 and is 5-8 in the BIG EAST.
"I think after such a grueling match on Friday night and coming back from our first loss you wonder how a team is going to respond," said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "I was really pleased with how we did what was expected and that's come out with great energy and battle. It's great to get our first win on Seton Hall's floor, and I thought our 6-2 offense performed well after a slow start in the first set."
Jaali Winters and Marysa Wilkinson each had 11 kills to pace the Creighton offense, with Wilkinson hitting .429 and fellow middle blocker Lauren Smith also hitting .583 in 12 swings. Kenzie Crawford had 19 assists for the Jays, while Ashley Jansen distributed 18 assists. The CU defense was led by 12 digs each by Jess Bird and Kate Elman. The victorious Bluejays tallied 44 kills, four aces, 50 digs and nine blocks on .264 hitting for the evening.
Danielle Schroeder paced Seton Hall with nine kills, while Tessa Fournier recorded a match-best 19 digs. The Pirates finished with 32 kills, two aces, 46 digs and six blocks on .147 hitting.
Creighton fell behind 17-11 in the first set before a big comeback on Elman's serve brought the Jays to even. CU took its first lead at 19-18 on a kill by Winters, and won the set on a kill by Smith from Crawford.
The Jays never trailed in the second set, hitting .424 in the frame, and overcame a 13-10 deficit in the third set to clinch the sweep. It was CU's first win in three tries at Walsh Gymnasium, the site of CU's only BIG EAST road loss last season.
Creighton returns to action next Friday night with a 7 pm match at third-place Marquette that will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
