Jara Delivers Game Winning Goal in OT for Women's Soccer
South Orange, N.J. - Senior Alyssa Jara delivered in the clutch for Creighton women's soccer as the California native punched in the game-winning goal in the 99th minute to give the Bluejays a 3-2 win at Seton Hall on Oct. 8.
The win lifted Creighton to 10-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 2-9-2 on the season and 1-3-0 in conference action.
Knotted at 2-2 in the final minute of the first extra session, junior Lauren Sullivan split four defenders on a run from midfield to just outside the goal box. Sullivan found Jara making a run along the right side. Jara took just one touch to strike the ball for the game-winner from 12-yards away.
"I just saw the run and thought, just one touch it," said Jara. "Once it went in I turned back to my teammates and saw them all cheering."
Early in the contest it was the Pirates that jumped out first as Seton Hall's Amanda Gulli knocked home a pass from Eva Gonzalez to put the Pirates up 1-0 in the 11th minute of play.
The Bluejays answered in the 21st minute when Sullivan collected a deflection of a pass by Jara to score her eighth goal of the season on a crossing shot from right to left from eight yards out.
Creighton pushed ahead in the 32nd minute when senior Jill Richgels put home a free kick off the far post from 30 yards away. Richgels shot came from left to right, glancing into the goal off of the right post.
The Bluejays' overtime heroics were necessary because Seton Hall's D'Yonna Riley drew the Pirates even at 2-2 in the 86th minute with an unassisted goal.
"This was a great team effort, but [Sullivan] put in an inspiring game and showed she is special player, a difference maker," said Creighton head coach Ross Paule. "I'm very proud of this team, they are showing great character as a unit."
The Bluejays outshot Seton Hall 14-11, but the Pirates held the edge on corners 5-4.
Creighton will continue its road trp our east as the Bluejays face the BIG EAST preseason favorite on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 12:00 pm.
