Women's Basketball Continues Long Road Trip at Nebraska on Sunday
12/5/2015 12:26:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Omaha, Neb. - Looking for a spark to the 2015-16 season, the Creighton Bluejays' WBB squad battles Nebraska on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2:00 pm
The Huskers own the series lead with Creighton, 29-11. Nebraska has lost just once to the Bluejays at home, that coming in 1993. The Bluejays own one victory over the Huskers in Lincoln, that coming on Dec. 10, 1993 (97-64).
Sunday will mark the second time that the Bluejays have played in Pinnacle Bank Arena. Creighton's first appearance in the Huskers' new home was a 63-38 loss on Dec. 14, 2013.
Scouting Nebraska (5-1)
Despite not entering the game on Sunday as a ranked opponent, Nebraska comes into the battle with the Bluejays with a wealth of options on the floor.
Freshman sensation Jessica Shepard leads the way with 19.5 ppg. She has topped the 20-point plateua in four of the Huskers' six contests. Just a step back are guards Natalie Romero and Rachel Theriot, who combine to average 27.5 ppg. Romero is sitting at 16.3 ppg, while Theriot had 20 in the win over North Carolina State on Dec. 3.
If that trio wasn't lethal enough the Huskers also boast the former guard from Drake, Kyndal Clark. A graduate transfer, Clark may just be averaging 3.2 ppg but she had some of her best efforts as a Bulldog against the Bluejays.
Outside of the loss to #1 Connecticut, the Huskers have not not been tested. Nebraska's victory margins this season have been 50/45/41/61 & 21. In the five wins the Huskers are averaging 90.4 ppg, while holding the opposition to 48.8 ppg.
Keys to the Game w/Nebraska
Making her first start in the Bluejays' fourth game of the season, freshman Audrey Faber cracked the starting unit earlier than any previous player under the direction of Jim Flanery.
Last season Bailey Norby earned a start in her fifth game as a Bluejay, while Sydney Lamberty started in her sixth contest. Consider that Marissa Janning did not start until game # 23.
Red and Blue? It happens more than you think
It is said that familiarity breeds contempt, the Huskers and Bluejays have an abundance of the former. Â

- Creighton is on the back end of a seven-game road trip, ending with contests at Nebraska (12/6) and at Utah (12/9).
- The Bluejays are 2-3 on the current road stretch, dropping its last game at Kansas 67-54 on Dec. 2.
- Nebraska, meanwhile, is off to a 5-1 start. The Huskers lone blemish this season was a loss to #1 Connecticut in Storrs on Nov. 28.
- The ties between Creighton and Nebraska are both plentiful and long standing. To name just a few, Nebraska head coach Connie Yori was the Bluejays leader from 1992-2002. Yori also played at Creighton from 1982-86 and remains the third leading scorer in Bluejay history with 2,010 points. Creighton head coach Jim Flanery served as an assistant for Yori both at Creighton and at Loras College (1990-92).
- Another connection on the two coaching staffs is Nebraska's Director of Operations, Danya Finch. A member of the Bluejays coaching staff from 2008-10, Finch played at Creighton (2000-04) and was a Husker assistant coach from 2010-15.
The Huskers own the series lead with Creighton, 29-11. Nebraska has lost just once to the Bluejays at home, that coming in 1993. The Bluejays own one victory over the Huskers in Lincoln, that coming on Dec. 10, 1993 (97-64).

Keys to the Game w/Nebraska
- Find consistency on offense: As expected from a young team, the Bluejays have been up and down this season. To compete with the Huskers, the Bluejays must find some consistency on offfense. Â
- Slow down Shepard: Jessica Shepard is an imposive force in the paint. Creighton, however, did a good job slowing down Kansas and will need the same effort against Nebraska.
- Take care of the ball: Creighton is typically adept at not committing turnovers, however the Bluejays gave the ball away 18 times at Kansas. Against the Huskers, turnovers usually end up as easy buckets.

- Yori is one of just two players in Creighton history to have her number retired, the other being Tanya Warren.
- Yori & Flanery both served as assistant coaches to current Creighton Athletic Director, Bruce Rasmussen, from 1987-90. Â
- Yori hired Flanery as an assistant coach during her first head coaching position at Loras College (1990-1992).
- The duo returned to Creighton when Yori replaced Rasmussen as the Creighton head coach in 1992. Â
- Yori was the Bluejay head coach from 1992-2002.
- Flanery was an assistant for Yori throughout her tenure at Creighton.
